‘Sup, Holmes?

It’s starting already.
A name has sufraced on the Republican side for the 2011 race for mayor: Bill Holmes. Holmes is a local executive for Wells Fargo and is said to be a supporter of Rio Nuevo. How far either of those tidbits will fly in a Tea Party drenched Republican Primary remains to be seen.

Steve Leal

It was Steve Leal’s last day on the council yesterday as he handed the reins over to his successor, Richard Fimbres.
Leal had been on the council for 20 years, which I think is some sort of record (it beats George Miller’s tenure on the council). He started out as an ex-hippie and Vietnam veteran who [...]

Stimulus Dollars Keeping at Least One Republican Employed

At the suggestion of one dedicated reader, I sifted through Shaun McCluskey’s last campaign finance report. He sent in an amended one due to a last minute infusion of cash and his last minute spending on hit pieces on Richard Fimbres.
It’s no big surprise: various members of Jim Click’s family as well as his employees [...]

A Thing I Meant to Write About Last Week

David Safier, who reads the Northwest Explorer so I don’t have to, linked this article by Emil Franzi over at Blog for Arizona. As expected from a Franzi column, you get your typical “why won’t these ignorant people listen to me?” plus a gratuitous sexist jab at Nina Trasoff. None the less, the column is [...]

What Now?

It’s been official for a few days, and it looks like Steve Kozachik is already putting a staff together for his council office. I’m curious about what he is going to be able to accomplish.
First off, he needs three other votes. On paper, this would be Bob Walkup plus the two moderate Democrats, Shirley Scott [...]

And Another Thing…

Both I and Jim Nintzel had our little rants on the Star’s editorial last week that condemned those citizens that dared organize a Facebook group to express their feelings about the direction of Downtown development.
I had a thought: let’s think back to the late 1960’s when “urban renewal” was all the rage. Dozens of businesses [...]

The Mote in Your Neighbor’s Eye

In an editorial this morning, the Star takes issue with a new Facebook group, “Boycott Stiteler & Kwang C. An in Downtown Tucson.” They allege that criticism of downtown re-development will send investors elsewhere.
Point taken. Does the rule that no one can criticize downtown re-development apply to their own employee Rob O’Dell too? Just curious.

Counting…

Word is that between 5,000 and 7,000 ballots were transfered from the recorder’s office to the county elections office this morning and at 1:00 the counting process had started. By this afternoon, we should have new numbers.
There is also word that these ballots come from Wards 2 and 4, where early ballots were roughly even [...]

I Dunno

My understanding is that there could be between five and seven thousand ballots out, among these are early ballots brought in to polling places. Don’t ask me what part of town they are from because I don’t know either. Early in the evening Steve Kozachik led Nina Trasoff, then a few thousand ballots came in [...]

Set the Snark Gun to “Stun”

The opposition to Proposition 200 consisted of people like Don Diamond and Brian Flagg as well as groups like the Chamber of Commerce and the Sierra Club. It’s a shame that the campaign against 200 was supported by folks like this, otherwise people from all parts of the community could have come together and formed [...]
