Jesse Kelly put out a press release yesterday touting Trent Franks’s prediction that Kelly would defeat Gabrielle Giffords.

So, let me get this straight: an out of town congressman appears in town for a fundraiser for Kelly, a congressman whose politics are way out of whack with the district and whose visits to the region could probably be counted on the left hand of a clumsy shop teacher said that Kelly would win, and this is some sort of neurtral, expert analysis that is worth quoting in a press release?

Franks thinks that Kelly will win? Wow, I don’t know why the rest of us bother then.

I received a press release from Jesse Kelly’s campaign announcing that he is bringing Trent Franks to town to campaign for him.

Franks is fairly low profile and his few media splashes have been for some rather out-there positions and statements (will he call Gabrielle Giffords an “enemy of humanity”?). Kelly’s campaign seems to think that Franks is a big deal in Southern Arizona, which begs the question: Kelly does know that there are voters in CD 8 that don’t attend tea party rallies, right?

Several Republican members, including our own Trent Franks, skipped out on a House Judiciary Committee meeting yesterday to attend the “Superbowl of Freedom!” This meant that several Republican amendments to strengthen the PATRIOT act failed. TPM has the details.

Heck, I was not all that enthused about these amendments anyway, but these same guys have been giving all of us a lecture about how important these changes are to our national security. So, Mr. Franks and company, is blathering on at a rally more important than our national security?

I suppose if you are more interested in putting on a fun show than governing, it is.

The Week in Hyberbole

There was a lot made of Trent Franks calling Barack Obama an “enemy of humanity” in the liberal blogosphere. But, that doesn’t worry me nearly as much as both of our Senators saber rattling and calling for “regime change” in Iran (here and here).

Hey, I don’t like the folks that run Iran either, but we are still cleaning up after “regime change” in two of Iran’s neighbors. Maybe we should, you know, figure out how to clean up those messes before we make another.

That Statement is No Longer Operative

Remember when I gave Trent Franks some props for not buying into this birther nonsense? I take it all back. Here is Franks quoted in Politico:

Taking the birther thing to a new level, archconservative Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) is considering filing a lawsuit to put President Obama on the spot over his birth documents, according to a Mohave Daily News readout of a Franks town hall over the weekend.

Geez.
