Scarpinato Moves On?

The talk from the half-empty hallways of TNI is that Daniel Scarpinato will be leaving the Star to write for the Yellow Sheet.
This would likely leave what is now our only local daily with no dedicated political reporter, as they are having a hiring freeze. It is assumed that reports from the capitol would likely [...]

Renzi Follow Up

Three years ago, you may remember that I wrote about something fishy going on around the US Attorney’s office investigation of Rick Renzi. My post got pooh-poohed even by some liberal bloggers and the talk of any investigation was dismissed out of hand by the Arizona Republic, but in the meantime, we’ve found out that [...]

A Bit Premature

Jim Nintzel over at the Weekly had a take on the Governor’s race that I’m very surprised that I haven’t heard more:

[I]t’s bad news for Dave Bradley, the state lawmaker from midtown Tucson who was mulling a gubernatorial run. Given how little name ID he has statewide, Bradley’s odds were long to begin with, but [...]

Come on Daniel, Really?

I hesitate to talk smack about Daniel Scarpinato since he’s always been a decent guy to me, but I gotta take issue with his column yesterday.
(See CORRECTION below)
Check out this bit from Political Notebook yesterday, where he wrote about Janet Napolitano’s visit to Tucson:

Full Court Word Press

A couple of days ago, Jimmy Boegle at the Weekly poked fun at the Tucson Citizen for putting together their site using free Word Press software. BREAKING: Hold on There, Podnah…

Terry Goddard’s office will be sending out a press release soon saying that he will pursue court action to block Gannett’s closure of the Tucson Citizen. Gannett may be in violation of the joint operating agreement, which allows them exemptions from anti-trust statutes.
Stay tuned.

Geography Lesson

Aside from everything else in last week’s article about Clarence Dupnik’s comments about the children of illegal immigrants, one particular sentence touched on a particular snit of mine:
Dupnik singled out the Sunnyside School District in South Tucson where he says a credible source told him one in four students are here illegally.
Setting aside the Russell [...]

Pyrrhic Victory

Congratulations to Ryan Gabrielson and Paul Giblin on winning the Pulitzer Prize for local reporting. Their work on a series on Joe Arpaio for the East Valley Tribune was cited by the Pulitzer committee.
Here is Tribune publisher Julie Moreno:
It’s just an incredible testament to the work that was done on that story and it’s nice to [...]
