Press Down Upon the Brow of Labor…

Tim Bee is bringing Labor Secretary Elaine Chao to Tucson for a fundraiser on Tuesday.  It would be so easy for me to go after Chao for being an anti-worker Secretary of Labor: whether it comes to being dismissive of organized labor, undermining worker safety or hunting down whistleblowers. Having Chao in charge of the Department of […]

“I’m Carson Daly, and I’m a Total Tool.”

Carson Daly has announced that he will be first late night talk show host to cross the picket lines (so to speak) and go into production despite the Writers’ Guild Strike.
Like I needed another reason to dislike the guy.

Writers’ Strike: What’s At Stake?

Even folks that are sympathetic with labor might find it hard to understand why seemingly pampered Hollywood writers would see the need to strike. I caught this off of the MySpace blog of Jenna Fischer, the actress who plays Pam Beasley on the American version of The Office. Yep, Jenna Fischer is my MySpace friend:
By now […]

You’ve Got a Friend

I spoke with Rebekah Friend, Executive Director of our state’s AFL-CIO, on Monday. She remarked that I haven’t mentioned her.
Geez, with all of the garbage that gets thrown at me, people want to be mentioned? Who knew?
As it turns out, there is an honor that Friend has managed to garner this week: the Arizona Capitol […]

Yeah, Now They Are For Card Check

The Mine Safety and Health Administration has told families of six trapped Utah miners that the United Mine Workers can’t represent their interests in the upcoming safety investigation.
The reason: the workers themselves have to sign the paperwork. Maybe they haven’t noticed, but it’s a little dark there and hard to see where to sign.
I’m sure […]

What A Maroon

Robert Murray would make an excellent Republican candidate.
Why?
Well, in yesterday’s briefing regarding the tragic events at the mine he owns in Utah, he denied the mounting scientific evidence that the mine collapse was not caused by an earthquake. Then, he took the opporitunity to deflect any criticism by attacking labor unions, environmentalists, foreigners and the […]

Hey, It’s Hot Out, I’m Sure They Were Just Trying to Cool Them Off

Growing up, I’d see protests against dictators in Poland, South Africa, Chile or wherever, and the response by those in charge was always the same: call out the water canons and show ‘em who’s boss. It was even George Wallace’s and Ross Barnetts’s weapon against civil rights protestors in our country back in the 1960’s.
It […]

New UFCW Report on Basha’s

Earlier this week, UFCW Local 99 presented a report to legislators regarding a pattern of ignoring employee complaints and intimidation of workers by management at stores owned by Basha’s. Kyrsten Sinema made a statement at a meeting arranged by her for Basha’s employees and State Representatives:
Their report paints a troubling picture of employment practices at Bashas’ […]

SEIU: Kicking Tail Up North

I heard from some folks up in Phoenix about SEIU’s organizing effort among state employees. The effort only started late last week, but they are already above 200 members. This is way above the union’s own expectations.
Monday, several new members of SEIU showed up at the state capitol to make the rounds with legislators. They […]
