I got word that Brian Miller, who has been regarded as an also ran in the CD-8 race, will have a fundraiser hosted by none other than Lute Olson. Strange, since Lute is for all intents and purposes an “establishment Republican” (his ex-wife is a Republican National Committee Woman for Pennsylvania) but odds on favorite Jonathan Paton didn’t get his blessing. What did he do? Root for ASU once?

Also announced this week is that Tom Tancredo’s and Bay Buchanan’s Team America PAC has given their endorsement to Jesse Kelly. The only appropriate response is “F*** YEAH!”

No word on whether Perry van der Beck is involved.

Voters who are unhappy with John Shadegg will have another viable choice: businessman Jon Hulburd.

No word on whether his last name is an homage to FC Dallas fanatic and Winning Ugly panelist Sarah Wilson.

Hulburd’s supporters are promising a well funded campaign. One supporter told me that Hulburd is looking to raise more than the $1.8 million that Bob Lord raised against Shadegg in 2008. Lord, by the way, is advising Hulburd.

Lord was beaten 54-42, which Democrats consider a decent number given the registration in the district. Even more than the registration advantage that Hulburd will be fighting will be Shadegg’s fundraising ability. In 2008, some saw Shadegg’s early fundraising numbers as lacsadaisical. It didn’t help that early in the year, it was unclear that Shadegg would even be a candidate. But, once Lord showed he was raising money, Shadegg turned on the taps and in the end, spent $1 million more than Lord. J. D. Hayworth will likely encounter the same phenomenon should he run against John McCain.

Still, having a strong Democratic candidate in an otherwise Republican district should help with turnout for state elections and divert Republican resources from other places.

NB – Note that Dave Schweikert was defeated by a similar margin that Lord was in his race against Harry Mitchell. And that was in a Republican district. Schweikert is considered by some to be the “Best Hope” to beat Mitchell this year. Go figure.

As it happens, there was a resolution in the United States House of Representatives honoring Real Salt Lake for winning MLS Cup this year over the Los Angeles Galaxy. The resolution was sponsored by Democrat Jim Matheson. There is also a similar resolution in the United States Senate, but for reasons that are typically obscure for that body, it has been referred to the Judiciary Committee.

A quick search of THOMAS revealed that only one previous MLS Cup winner has been so honored, even the storied DC United went un-honored by the US House for their Inter-American Cup win over Vasco da Gama. The only previous winner given a resolution was 2008 cup winner Columbus Crew, and that resolution only had one co-sponsor. Our own Harry Mitchell was one of the 55 co-sponsors for the resolution. Mitchell, interestingly enough, represents Marcos de Niza High School, former stomping grounds of ex-LA Galaxy standout Greg Vanney. Perhaps in a bit of Galaxy loyalty, the man that represents Alan Gordon’s hometown of Gilbert, Jeff Flake, left his name off the list of co-sponsors.

Actually, I don’t know what district either Vanney or Gordon are registered in. I could call Bret Mecum and ask him to check.

I’ve been reading in the soccer media that a group of owners has bought the rights to the names of several old NASL teams. One of these was the Boston Minutemen, but they did not purchase the name of the other Boston team, the Tea Men. I’ve been wracking my brain trying to come up with some sort of clever angle for why the name “Minutemen” would be more palatable than “Tea Men” given current politics, but no dice.

Earlier this evening, as most of you now know, one of our own, Rush Hudson Limbaugh, while taking withering fire, crashed and burned.

Tonight, Rush is no longer ‘just’ a radio personality.

Tonight, Rush is no longer ‘just’ a NFL owner denied

Tonight, Rush is us. And we are him.

Tonight Rush became the metaphor for all of us… every man woman and child in this great nation of ours.

The enemy of this great nation, the enemy of you and me, Rush’s enemy… those on the left, inside and outside of this nation abhor success… and when faced with it will destroy it… by any and all means possible.

We all have our dreams in life… such as they might be. Rush dreamed of being an owner in the NFL.

Tonight the left proved that they will stop at nothing to end our dreams. Our dreams of success and happiness devastate their need to dominate and control you and me… and well everything and everyone.

If you dare, read the full post and you will be treated to a conservative blogger quoting Martin Niemöller (Yeah, the folks at RedState would really give a hoot if they came for the trade unionists). You’d almost think that Limbaugh’s bid, a longshot according to most analysts, was derailed by ACORN, the ACLU and Media Matters, rather than the NFL owners, who are a group of rather conservative businessmen. Limbaugh’s dream of NFL ownership (no, not dream, birthright, apparently) was scuttled when St. Louis Blues and Real Salt Lake owner Dave Checketts dropped him from the ownership group. Checketts and his family have given to Democrats in the past, but the last one was in 2003 and those are dwarfed by the tens of thousands he gave to both John McCain’s campaign and the RSCC last year.

Victimized by liberals? Hardly.
