Final Darts Thrown Before the Primary: Collins v Carroll

I’m not always the biggest fan of Ray Carroll, but count me as one that will be glad to see him dispatch his opponent, Sean Collins, tomorrow. Collins’s campaign has been mostly centered around the Rosemont Mine. From talking to local Republicans, Collins hasn’t been very good in public appearances. “Dull and inarticulate” is how one put it to me. Word to Rosemont’s other put up candidates (I’m looking at you Fernando Gonzales and Tanner Bell), if Rosemont is going to be your one issue, you may want to learn how to talk about it.

The best indications that Collins is going down are the attacks on Carroll’s supporters. It’s funny to watch him go after county treasurer Beth Ford of all people, but having his supporters call out Bruce Ash as a “RINO” for his support of Carroll is, by far, the most entertaining dumb-ass name calling of the cycle, possibly the decade.

Word to local RINO hunters: if you really believe that Ash, the staunchest Republican you’ll meet and the person responsible for some of the nastiest IE campaigns against local Democrats in recent years, is some sort of crypto-liberal, you really, really need to get out more. The stale indoor air is doing something to you.

Ted, you are certainly right that Carroll wins tomorrow and deserves the victory. Collins is an utter goof and is also known by the company he keeps. He is the latest in a string of right-wing attack dogs who practice the politics of division, distortion and smear.

My question to Republicans like Carroll is where was their indignation when Collins-like candidates were plying their wares against people like Toni Hellon, Pete Hershberger, Steve Huffman and Ann Day? It is equally hilarious to hear Carroll and his backers slamming Collins supporters like Randy Graf and John Munger. I recall Bruce Ash being very pro-Graf back in 2006 when Graf took on Gabby and Carroll was a Munger supporter when the latter ran for governor in 2010.

Attack dogs will sometimes slip out of their harnesses and turn on their owners. Ash, Carroll and other Republicans have played the “go along to get along” game for many years while their party was becoming more elitist, narrow-minded and intolerant of dissent within its ranks. If the always charming and ambitious Sugar Ray survives to fight another day, maybe he and Ash will wise up and start to CONSISTENTLY speak out against the Collins clones who have been calling the tune in their party for quite a while. So far, the only Republican who has had the cojones to do that has been Steve Kozachik.

Does this sound like someone that is a ‘business acumen’? Collins can’t balance his own checkbook let alone Pima Co. budget.

1996 – Bankruptcy – “…my now, ex- wife.” [Collins website]

2012 – Take a look at the Cancellation of Notice of Trustee’s sale recorded in Pima County on 3/30/12, sequence #20120901021. The sale would have occurred around 3/29/12. The cancellation is signed on 3/26/12 with the cancellation recorded on 3/30/12. Apparently came up with all of the money at the last minute

    Lets talk character –

When it was made public that Mr. Collins membership with the Vail Community Action Board (VCAB) was revoked, he said it was due to surgery and attendances. You can get excused absences with the VCAB board.

Mr. Collins in public talks and on his website said (“Sean was also the past President of the Cienega Rotary and a member of the Vail Community Action Board.) Mr. Collins membership in the Vail Community Action Board was revoked (Passed unanimously). [Sean Collins had a great many concerns about being revoked, but it did not change his attendance. http://vailcab.org/1060 , Strategic Planning and Operations Committee – Minutes of: Monday, February 6, 2012.]

Not my fault. (Collins had a great many concerns about being revoked, but it did not change his attendance.)

When asked about the Rotary fundraiser loss, right away Mr. Collins said “That’s a lie.”

    No it is Not!

Mr. Collins campaign has many misleading items.

One of his claims to being qualified for BOS is that [from his website] “…Sean was also the past President of the Cienega Rotary…” Correct Sean was President of the Cienega Rotary, but under his leadership the Cienega Rotary fundraiser loss about $6,000.00, [notes from BOARD MEETING MINUTES January 30, 2007, Location: Edward D. Jones office, Call to order by President, Sean Collins, at 7:00 am.] (CRAMFEST, this was discussed and commented on by every member of the board. The treasurer, gave a report of finances from the event, showing a loss of approximately $6000. General consensus was lack of planning and communication for such a large venue.). And guess how Mr. Collins handled it (President, Sean Collins, and Vice President, resigned their positions in the club, formal letters of resignation have not been received. When it gets tough, the tough gets going – Collins walks out
