I remember an editorial cartoon published after the 1992 New Hampshire Primary (it may have been Steve Benson, I’m not sure) that showed Bill Clinton and Pat Buchanan on an Olympic medal stand. Both were on the second place step but nonetheless held their arms up in triumph. Off to the side were George H. W. Bush and Paul Tsongas staring at their gold medals.
It’s funny, because to this day I see “political strategists” on the teevee who assert that Clinton and Buchanan won that primary.
I don’t know what exactly brought this to mind.
