Republican National Committeeman Bruce Ash put up a response to my post congratulating Regina Romero for having a baby stating that he hopes she doesn’t use the child as a “political human shield.” I’m still stuck on what prompted this little outburst. Surely, Ash wouldn’t be such a jackass as to criticize Romero for being absent from Tuesday night’s contentious council meeting so soon after giving birth, would he?
Naw, he’s got to be refering to something else. I can’t put my finger on it.

No. Still can’t quite place it.

Maybe he’s talking about this email I got yesterday (complete with a picture from the hospital of Regina and her newborn)?

Happy New Year!
Just as we were celebrating the end of the terrible recession-filled 2009, we wake up Sunday morning and read the headlines about a recall effort on Councilors Regina Romero and Karin Uhlich and Mayor Bob Walkup. What?!
The good news is little Luciana Reyes was born at 5 a.m. January 4th to Regina Romero and Ruben Reyes. She was 6 days early but couldn’t wait to get out and start changing the world.
Will you help her? Please contact the media and ask your friends and neighbors to oppose the recall. Let’s continue to focus on how much we love Tucson and work together to make it better and better, even in tough economic times. Stay tuned for more information from Regina about the budget and ideas and suggestions for the future, but for now, please help welcome a new leader. She understands we need to move Tucson forward, not dwell on the past.
Regina will be working from home for January but will be checking email, regina.romero@tucsonaz.gov, and messages at the office, (520) 791-4040.
Wow…a picture of her baby in a fundraising e-mail. It is unprecedented.
So much for now, I guess, for Ash’s overtures to the “brown people.”
PocoBravo: are you trying to imply that Bruce Ash has something against “Brown People”???? I bet he is a lot darker than you!!! Do you know what Mr. Ash looks like or are you just making an assumption?
Tedski: saw you at the dinner for Steve Leal, sitting next to Richard Elias. We waved at each other from across the room. I know that I would have made our Chairman VERY uncomfortable if I would have approached your table.
By the way–Bruce Ash is DARKER THAN BOTH OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ja Ja Ja!!!
Patrick-
Time spent at the tanning salon doesn’t count.
Patrick, I’ll concede whatever debate you’re putting forward in regard to Ash’s darkness. He may well be darker than all of us, though to suggest so conjures a Vader-esque image of sinister power inappropriate for the reliably insulting but hardly powerful Ash. My “brown people” reference was to regrettable remarks Ash famously made on the radio last October:

Tedski, we can dish it out, but not take it? i too received the campaign/official email and thought it left something to be desired for.
Happy for the birth, but really?
Ok… I got the email, didn’t think it was in bad taste. I did think that it effectively explained Regina Romero’s absence from the Mayor and Council meetings. In addition, it also addressed the recall.
as an aside to Tedski- I generally have respect for the things you write about and the comments you make. I take most with a grain of salt and realize that they come from a snarky but but not mean point of view. The difference with this- you know Regina and her family and you have been friends for years. Why use this medium to make your observation? I think that is tacky. If you feel that the email was not to your liking you could express that to her directly.
But then where would I get my talking points?
