Ann Louise Nixon CooperThe 106 year old woman who Barack Obama mentioned in his victory speech, Ann Nixon Cooper, has passed away. This year, Cooper worked with reporter Karen Grigsby Bates and released her autobiography, A Century and Some Change: My Life Before the President Called My Name. Bates wrote up a short rememberance of this remarkable woman for the site The Root.

Cooper was one of two centinarians whose lives helped us understand what an achievement last year’s election was. The other was Amanda Jones, the daughter of a slave from Bastrop County, Texas. Jones died the evening of her 110th birthday, a month after the election.
