Overinterpreting

The big talk today is that Jan Brewer will announce she is running for re-election.

Or is that just “election”? Do they call it re-election when you never actually got elected to the office? You are all free to argue about this. The more pedantic the comment, the better, I always say.

Dean MartinI spoke to an R-Cubed correspondent who attended a meeting of a local business organization at El Parador on Tuesday. Dean Martin happened to be there and spoke at the meeting. Martin’s speech, according to this observer, centered on the duties of the treasurer’s office and what he’s been doing there. I’m sure this was absolutely thrilling, especially coming from a master rhetorician such as Martin.

Terry GoddardThe witness thought that such a dry, technical speech was an indication that Martin was not going to run for governor. Not so fast on that one. Terry Goddard’s public speeches, until recently, were similar dry recitations of prosecutions that his office was pursuing. The other thing to consider is that the group likely invited him as State Treasurer, rather than a candidate for Governor, and a more “political” speech might have been inappropriate.

Also, Martin was in Tucson. A Phoenix Republican acknowledging that Tucson exists? And actually coming to Tucson…smack dab in the middle of town, not just the penumbra like Tucson Country Club or Ventana Canyon? He’s got to be wanting votes for something.

  • So he is speaking to a group that would be mostly Republican and likely primary voters? Sounds to me like he is hitting his target.
