And the 2010 Silliness Begins…Now!

ThrasherA couple of weeks back, an e-mail went out from a Bill Smith which endorsed Republican Jim Weiers, Democrat Jackie Thrasher and Democrat Justin Johnson for next year’s District 10 legislative race. Weiers is, of course, the former House Speaker, Thrasher is a former House member looking to make a comeback and Johnson is the son of former Phoenix Mayor Paul Johnson and a likely candidate for State Senate. The e-mail included a sample sign with all three candidates as a slate.

Needless to say, neither the Weiers nor Thrasher campaigns are really that enthused about being tied to one another. No one seems to know who Bill Smith is (although his team has since moved to Glendale, it is likely not the former wide reciever for the Chicago Cardinals, who died in 1999, but maybe it could be the “Adventures with Bill” guy from the Red Green Show), and there is no campaign filed with the Secretary of State’s office. The Thrasher campaign ignored the e-mail until signs started popping up in Phoenix and they decided it was time to send a press release on the matter.

“Smith” claimed to have a website, bringjackieback.net, but that URL is just a GoDaddy placeholder. Oddly enough, bringjackieback.com is the site for fans of the comedian Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling. Go figure.

There is confusion about what may motivate this whole thing. Is this a Republican looking to tie Weiers to the “liberal” Thrasher, a Democrat trying to make Thrasher look bad by tying her to a well-known Republican, or is there, in fact, a Mr. Smith who is ideologically confused and likes both of them?

Ready or not, your 2010 cycle has begun, folks!

  • … and I am sitting here waiting for John Thrasher to throw his hat in for CD2. Clearly I am missing all the fun and action.
