As an Engineer…
Back when Lew Murphy was mayor, a piece of campaign literature was out that showed a cartoon of Murphy doing his best to drag a donkey. The point was that Murphy, a very popular mayor, could get so much more done if only he had a Republican majority council.
In the 2005 election, Bob Walkup’s name was used in campaign literature as well as a headliner at volunteer events. A slightly different version of the same message: keep the two Republicans in office so I, who you all seem to like, can keep doing what I think is best for the city.
We still, despite our registration figures, have Walkup as a Republican mayor, but if his name is being used at all, it is sparingly. It can’t be a matter of his popularity; he’s still quite popular. It can’t be that his moderation irritates the base; Ray Carroll, whose mdoeration is in line with Tucson Republicans, has been labeled as a supporter of the candidates.
So, what all is going on here?

It’s very simple. If his honor were to run today he would have a primary.

…and he’d win that primary.
