Too Tired from Posing

Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve seen our Republican legislators try to spin the legislative session. Sometimes, this comes off pretty darned pathetic.

The latest salvo from their side is the assertion that they could probably sue the Governor, but they choose not to. Mighty magnamanous of them. For some reason, some in our state’s media are putting this out there with a minimum of skepicism.

There were challenges to Janet Napolitano’s line item vetoes, all but one failed. The one that succeded is, understandably, the one cited in the letter that Kirk Adams and Bob Burns sent to the governor. Just because a court case is convienient to cite doesn’t mean that it is on point. In that particular case, Napolitano tried to line out a provision dealing with state employees, clearly a policy matter. Challenges were made to other Napolitano line item vetoes, but because they dealt with appropriations, the courts let them stand. I talked to two long time “railbirds” and one attorney who is familiar with the facts and they all told me that it would be tough to argue that Brewer’s line item vetoes were “policy” rather than “appropriation.” It’s not that they suddenly feel like not hurting the governor’s feelings and want to do what is “good for the state,” it’s that they likely would have lost a lawsuit and further embarassed themselves.

All this “Cut us some slack” and “We could sue you, but we won’t”…I thought us liberals were the whiners.

  • All I know is that I’m a parent, and I’m pissed. And so are most of the parents of school kids I know.

And making the case that they are upset that the Governor prevented them from cutting the schools even deeper isn’t going to help them at all.

  • But they are making that case!

That big bully the Governor stepped on their precious tax cut and squashed it, and then gave it to the schools and social services to prevent the budget ax from cutting quite as deep.

They don’t realize how mad people are about the fact that their children are paying the price for the cuts (and that includes charter school kids too.)
