Our Very Special Session Is Over, Much Like a Very Special Episode, But We Didn’t Learn Any Important Lessons

The legislature has adjourned Sine Die. This is happening despite the ongoing “Five Party” talks with la Cervecera and the various legislative caucuses. She’s got until tomorrow to either sign the budget without the sales tax, which would be out of balance, or veto them opening up the circus yet again.
The goings on in the [...]

News from One of the Other Guys Running for Congress

Jesse Kelly’s campaign has been attempting to make him out to be the main opponent to Gabrielle Giffords. Understandable as a stretegy, but it is worth noting that he’s got at least two opponents, one of them is Air Force vet Brian Miller.
Miller’s latest press release is bragging that he agrees with the town hall [...]

That Statement is No Longer Operative

Remember when I gave Trent Franks some props for not buying into this birther nonsense? I take it all back. Here is Franks quoted in Politico:
Taking the birther thing to a new level, archconservative Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) is considering filing a lawsuit to put President Obama on the spot over his birth documents, according [...]

Nuestro Primo, Flaco Goddard

A correspondent forwarded me an article that recently appeared in the Denver Post. Money quote:
Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, a Hispanic, said Latinos make up 30 percent of Arizona’s population but only 6 percent of the voting population.
Yeah, the definition for Hispanic has evidently been expanded to include lanky white guys.

What Was Weak Last Week…

I’ve been enjoying the minor fracas among the Republicans that broke out late last week when the following YouTube video was making the rounds:

There were charges about who was behind the video, and fingers pointed to one of the usual suspects, Constantine Querard. There wasn’t much indication of who paid for the video, but there [...]

Nice Timing on that One!

This from yesterday’s Arizona Guardian:
For the first time since she took office, Gov. Jan Brewer sat down Friday with leaders of all four legislative caucuses to talk about the 2010 budget crisis.
Wow. I wouldn’t want the governor to rush into anything. I mean, it is only August and a package of cuts is on her [...]

Town Halls: Be Very Afraid!

Last night, Kyrsten Sinema returned to our corner of the state to hold a health care town hall in Marana. Sinema has been holding these meetings in her capacity as a member of Barack Obama’s White House Health Reform Task Force. As has been par for the course, there were protesters from both sides, but [...]

What We Need Is a Blue Ribbon Panel!

La Cerveceria has formed a “budget commission” and put Thayer Verschoor at the head of it. Her charge to the commission is to hold hearings on cutting spending and finding new revenues.
Hmm. Sounds good. ‘Cept for one thing: I thought we had a “commission” that already has this job. You know, the State Legislature.
Interestingly, Verschoor [...]

Budget Transmitted to Governor

The House and Senate moved to transmit the budget to the governor, but I’m told not to expect the signature too soon. La Cervecera still needs assurances from leadership that her sales tax proposal will be acted before she signs. The legislature will likely not convene again this year, so any deal on that front [...]

Make a Joke and I Will Sigh…

Durring my years with the Young Democrats of America, I used to run with a guy named Rickey Cole. In addition to his exalted position within the YDA, Cole served as chairman of his county’s Democratic Party.
Back in 1998, Cole was doing election day organizing for Ronnie Shows, the Democratic candidate for congress in his [...]
