Shocked! Shocked!
We have a new poster on here named Ryan Bailey who is shocked that there is support for Barack Obama on this site. What I’m curious about is this: is he only feigning shock for rhetorical effect, or is he genuinely perplexed that there is support for Obama on a famoulsy left-of-center site?
Next up: Ryan visits The Landry Hat and is confused that there are people there who like the Dallas Cowboys.

On a day where I thought I’d be unable to laugh at the absurd…you’re a de–er gem, Tedksi.
Rock on, jefe.

One year, I worked my polling place in Armory Park for signatures. One of the county election workers was a prototypical beehive-haired woman from Green Valley with a smoking habit. She stepped outside for a smoke break and approached me.
She leaned forward and asked, almost in a whisper “Are you a Democrat?”
“Yes.” I answered.
“Are most of the people around here Democrats?”
“Yes.” I answered, wondering how it was that this could be a surprise to anybody who was familiar with the area.
“That’s very strange.” She said.
“Not in Tucson it isn’t, ma’am.” I said.
“Well, I didn’t know there were so many Democrats.”
To this I wanted to say, “That’s because you live in a racially segregated community for old farts,” but I refrained because.
I guess if one does not get out much, does not even know their own neighbors, does not associate with people who do not look like them, and gets all one’s information about the wider world from hyperpartisan sources, it is understandable that one could convince ones self that Democrats are somehow abberant.

Nice!
I thought that the people who visit this site might be a bit more thoughtful than to just follow and believe in someone who said one thing and then did another. The days of Bush are over and you can’t run around and blame everything on him. We have a new guy in office, a scary new guy.
I don’t really believe what Obama is doing represents the ideals of the Democrat Party; it represents the Obama Party which is clearly so far to the left that it even scares Democrats. The real Democrat Party was still an American Party. The people were still represented along with some form of American ideals. I personally know many lifelong Democrats that are absolutely frightened with the things that Obama is doing, like Cap & Trade and the Healthcare plan. I know someone who is a Democratic Party Vice Chair and a Young Democrat National Committeeperson, in other words they are very involved in the Democrat Party, and they even say that don’t support what he is doing or stands for.
I would like to have a dialog on this, is there any ground in the middle or are we just that divided, as far as ideals go, in this country. I’m what I consider to be a Libertarian Republican, in other words, I only, at best, partially agree with the Republicans, however I agree with them more than the Democrats. I am shocked, as you put it, by how far divided we are. I know people, Republicans, Democrats and independents, storing food and buying guns because they think we are headed to civil war. These are what I consider regular people, but they are truly frightened at what is going on. How did we get this divided? I don’t believe that any rationale person could believe and support everything that their party does.
I came here for information and dialog, not silly personal attacks.

I always appreciate it when a Republican tells me what Democrats believe.
July 31st, 2009 at 10:48 am
What do you believe then? Do you know? Can you tell me?

Mad Dem

Exactly where did I tell you what Democrats believe??

You know what bugs me? When people call it the, “Democrat Party.”

Ryan, I consider myself a left of center moderate. I am more independant, but in AZ you have to register as a Dem or Rep to vote in primaries, so I am a Dem.
That said, I don’t feel like Obama has strayed from the Democrats. In fact, I think in some ways he’s tried very very hard to be moderate and work in the middle. I am surprised to hear you feel like Dems think he’s too far left, because in my moderate world of living in the Foothills in Tucson (which is a more affluent area) where there are a lot of Republicans, I am not really hearing that. I hear some fear mongering over health care, but that seems to be coming from extreme partisanship.
As a libertarian, I wonder how many of your circle is actually in the middle? I’ve been following the state budget fiasco very closely, and I think that a lot of the problems are stemming from Libertarians dressing as Republicans and trying to fix a budget that cannot be fixed if you are acting as a libertarian. In fact, seeing what Gould, et al is doing has made me very leery of the libertarians.
I’m off to go on vacation, so I won’t be checking back anytime soon, but I hope that opens up a new train of thought for you…

I keep getting this error.
Sorry Pat, Democratic Party. Pat, what role do you think the czars play in the democratic process and do they have a legitimate place in the system?
Thanks Ellis, I think about it and get back to you!

Ryan, Obama is a moderate liberal who is seeking pretty middle of the road, and I think eventually too modest, solutions for problems. Cap and trade, removed from the fear-mongering, is largely a scheme to avoid making the hard choice to actually mandate real greenhouse gas emissions. The market for trading this carbon credits will likely enrich investors while I have little doubt the worst polluters will find loop-holes to avoid reducing pollution.
The same is true of the health care proposals being suggested. There are many models of universal health care available that can be looked at, but rather than suggest them we have a proposal Obama is backing that will likely largely mean more profits for health insurance companies. That is, unless the public option is in the plan, but even this would only have a chance of limiting healthcare costs. I have serious doubts this proposed system will provide either universal coverage or check the rate of growth in costs.

Hey Everyone,
Thanks for the insight. I guess I can no longer post on this site. Sorry to those who I have offended, I intended to offend no one, just seek a dialog and information. I had no idea that people were offended so easily or that they would attack and email me so maliciously.
Best, to all of you.

Hey Ryan,
As a very left of center Democrat (I hate guns and meat and I want socialized medicine, housing and vegetables) I can tell you that Obama is not from the liberal, or any where close to liberal, side of the party. He is a pragmatic centrist who has had to lean slightly conservative to get things through stick-in-the-mud congress.

Ryan I don’t know what email you have received but I don’t see anyone attacking you here.

“I know people, Republicans, Democrats and independents, storing food and buying guns because they think we are headed to civil war. These are what I consider regular people,”
Really? People stockpiling munitions and dry goods in response to a guy with an approval rating hovering around the 60% mark seems reasonable to you, huh?
Honestly, are we an island of insanity, here in Arizona? Are Jack Harper and Al Melvin actually representative of the people of Arizona?
July 31st, 2009 at 6:42 pm
I don’t know about you, but tonight I am going out to load up on my guns and my food supply
Why o’ why does Jack Harper keep being elected?
July 31st, 2009 at 8:15 pm
why does Jack Harper keep being elected?
gerrymandering. You can thank the 2000 redistricing commission for that.

VWG:
I’m trying to visualize you with holstered pistols and an ammo belt on.
And I’m having trouble getting there (you would look hot though.)

Why does Ryan think he’s been chased away? The comments here are so civilized and downright nice compared to most places. Is there a trap door that the trolls drop through after a set number of posts?
August 1st, 2009 at 3:31 pm
No, Susan ‘Ryan’ will be back. With a different pseudonym.

I think he was having problems with the gravatar validation… I have that problem too when I am behind the county firewall….
