Frickin’ Brilliant

Want to know a secret? The great Detective Remmington Steele? I invented him…

No, wait. That’s not right.

The secret is this: this “budget deal” doesn’t really balance the budget.

Okay, first off, they are implementing this “flat tax” silliness. You may remember the flat tax as the brilliant idea that catapulted Steve Forbes to the Republican nomination and the presidency back in 1996.

You mean that didn’t work?

The “flat tax” will result in less revenue for the state. So much so, that Jan Brewer’s billion dollar sales tax hike may not cover the revenue loss, much less provide money to make up for cuts in education and other programs. Even if the public passes the sales tax hike, we may be in for more cuts.

Brewer’s sales tax hike is an important part of the budget balancing plan. So important that the Republican leaders that are pushing this deal are pledged to campaigning for it to assure its passage. Oh, you mean they aren’t? You mean to tell me that you think that they would welcome the defeat of the sales tax so they can make another round of budget cuts? Naw. Can’t be. By the way, Marszałek Senatu Bob Burns pretty much said that he’d welcome more cuts this morning.
