Robin Hood in Reverse

Word is that the governor and legislative leaders came to an agreement last night. In another instance of the sort of Keystone Kops that gives the rest of us a bit of humor (as well as the hope that they might trip over their own apendages), many rank and file members found out about details not from their own leaders, but from the media.

I haven’t yet seen the full budget, which should have been posted late this afternoon so it can be voted on tomorrow. My understanding is that it has not only a sales tax hike, but an increase in residential property taxes. Oh, and to make it even better, it still cuts corporate taxes. Yep. Even with our state’s budget problems, with state programs for the poor being shuttered, with schools struggling, they still are finding room for more cuts in corporate taxes.

Kurwa mać!

I’m sure they will claim that cuts in corporate taxes will result in more investment in our state. Yes, it’s the old supply side argument that our flaccid economy can be stimulated by Adam Smith’s invisible hand. I suppose that can be argued at the national level, but it is hard to guarantee that this will result in more investment in our state. It is nonsensical and, yes, plutocratic to put the entire burden of balancing this budget on working families while still giving our state’s wealthiest and most comfortable interests even more breaks.

Those that have the stomach for keeping up with this can watch the updates on former Representative John Loredo’s Facebook Page. There will also be a rally against this steamer of a budget at the capitol tommorrrow.

  • After my heated exchange with AZ Science Foundation’s Dr. William Harris at the Phx Nucleus club last week, where he sneered at my suggestion that he tell his CEO pals that they ought to stop demanding corporate tax breaks if they’re going to complain about funds being yanked from their precious foundation, I came to the inescapable conclusion that the plutocrats really do believe in public-private partnerships. The public pays for everything and the private corporations rake in the profits.

  • Uh, Ted, there’s this thing on google that allows us to translate from Polish to English.

  • Well, one thing we have to be ready to do: Hit the Republicans hard with ‘they raised our taxes’ just before your local county treasurer sends out next year’s property tax bill.

  • Puta madre, you should watch your language, Tedski. The really funny part is that Google came up with a LinkedIn page: “Directory of professionals named kurwa mac on LinkedIn.” There wasn’t anybody listed.
