What is the Governor Doing?

It seems that La Cervecera’s plans to sell her budget proposals have been scaled back from the “total war” plan suggested by her advisors to an overly stage managed “town hall” meeting that featured only comments from invited guests. Her advisors switched to this plan because this tactic worked so splendidly when George W. Bush was selling his Social Security overhall.

Marszałek Senatu Bob Burns has told the Yellow Sheet that he has reached an agreement with Brewer to support his budget. So, is she still telling Democratic members that the budget is veto bait?

  • According to the Arizona Republic http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/2009/06/11/20090611budget0611.html

House Democratic leader David Lujan said Brewer told him she is prepared to shut down state government if she can’t reach an accord with the GOP-controlled Legislature by the end of the month. In the event of a shutdown, Brewer’s priority would be to maintain court services, corrections, public safety and health programs, her spokesman Paul Senseman said. The state must have a budget for fiscal 2010 in place by July 1.

    [snip]

Brewer met separately Wednesday with Lujan, the House minority leader, and Jorge Garcia, the Senate minority leader. Both men said she acknowledged that she will need Democrats’ votes to get her budget passed, but she has resisted their calls to invite them to the negotiating table.

Lujan said Democrats were willing to vote with Brewer, but they want a voice in shaping the final budget. For example: The Democrats don’t like the idea of increasing the sales tax. Instead, they support broadening the state’s sales-tax base by taxing services currently exempt, such as accounting, while lowering the overall rate.

  • Let’s play budget chicken!!!

  • “Both men said she acknowledged that she will need Democrats’ votes to get her budget passed, but she has resisted their calls to invite them to the negotiating table.”

Will someone tell me WHY the DEMS aren’t allowed at the “table?” Afraid they might class the joint up? I’m sorry…but is the governor suggesting her concerns are only in saving Republicans and their interests in this state? To hell with everyone else?

This is unacceptable. I get that the majority party wants to bully the DEMS out of the “closed door meetings” but the governor – regardless of HOW she got there – is supposed to be working in the best interest of ALL ARIZONANS regardless of partisan bulls*&t politics.

  • I’m so jealous of your command of Spano-Polish! I could really propel the Dem Diva blog to the big times if only I could harness it.

As for Gov. Brewer, she don’t need no Dem or Repub lege, she’s got HighGround Electrolytes! Her budget’s got what plants crave!

  • These Republicans are leaving a trail that will smell so foul for so long, they won’t be able to win a school board seat for decades.
