At the Request of Mom
My mother took issue with CNN when they, among other media outlets, were refering to Hermosillo as a “town” or even a “small town.” My mom has a personal stake in the matter since my grandmother was born there. Anyhow, she’d like me to note that Hermosillo has over 640,000 people, which makes it larger than Denver (590,000), Boston (610,000) and Milwaukee (600,000). It is even larger than CNN’s headquarters city of Atlanta (520,000).
She wonders if this designation of “town” is because it is in Mexico. I think it is because they haven’t heard of it.

It should also be noted that Hermosillo is the capitol of Sonora, one of the most prosperous states in Mexico.
Even the local media displayed remarkable ignorance on this. They talked about Hermosillo and Sonora like it was some distant, strange place. Do we even know where we are or where we came from?

Nicely said Ted and Tom. I was going to add that it is the Capital of Sonora. So, what I will add is that it is a BIG, BIG town. It has a zoo, a professional baseball (beisbol) club, theater, parks, a downtown, suburbs, hotels, restaurants, bars, and stuff.
Most would pass through it if you are going to Bahia Kino, San Carlos, or Guymas…it people weren’t so afraid to even cross the border these days.
Neat city…really.

It has a University as well, which is more than we can say for most of the “cities” in Maricopa County.

It states in the CNN talking points that only places Americans have heard of can be called cities. We also have to remember that developing nations cannot have cities by rule… I’m sure Ted can look up the UN Declaration for that.
