Live Blogging the Destruction of Arizona as We Know It

12:30 Your intrepid blogger, signing off.
12:29 It looks like they are just passing a series of non-budget bills. It’s not like the clock is ticking anymore, I guess.
12:28 Verschoor, jacketless and open colared, is leaning back in his chair Blackberrying.
12:27 COW report adopted. Now they are resolving into COW again. Geez.

A Moment of Levity

Text message I recieved from a capitol watcher:
In response to Marty Schultz saying the leadership was in “hot and heavy negotiations” said [John] Kavanagh “in my experience what usually comes out of hot and heavy anything is unwanted children”

Wow.

Just got word that the senate rules committee just killed the sales tax referendum. Remember the tax was a key part of the deal to assure the governor’s signature.

And It Just Gets Worse…(Yeah, Bringing That Back)

One bill lost in the prop wash of the budget debacle is SB1157, which would continue the Department of Environmental Quality. The bill is still sitting in the rules committee, and has to go through caucus, committee of the whole and 3rd read by midnight tonight or -poof- no more ADEQ.

Tick…tick…tick…

Something important to remember about yesterday’s events at the legislature: after Russell Pearce’s embarasment about not being able to get the budget bills through his committee, they shopped until they found one that could pass the bills, the education committee. Here’s to hoping that this is an indication that Pearce has passed the zenith of [...]

Late Night Update

Update

This from Jennifer Loredo’s legislative update done on behalf of the Arizona Education Association:
Budget Update- Monday at 11:45
The Senate Appropriations Committee started at 11:15 (it was set to begin at 9:30). The committee heard the first bill (the general appropriations bill/aka the “money bill”). The only members in the committee were the seven [...]

Gordon Takes On Pearce

I must say this much for Phil Gordon: all the times I’ve criticized him for supporting Republicans (and not just a moderate or two), there are a few knuckledraggers he’s willing to call out.
He had an editorial in the Republic calling out Russell Pearce for making up facts when Pearce decided to criticize Phoenix as [...]

And, the Keystone Kops Moment We Were All Waiting For…

For those of you that haven’t heard, the budget deal fell apart this weekend. I was going to make an analogy to folding like the US back line in the second half of today’s final, but it is just too soon…too painful.
I will say this much: Dan Eckstrom will always tell you that the most [...]
