Disappointed

Clarence DupnikLet me get this right: if we stop teaching English to immigrants, MS-13 will pack up and go home.

Geez, Clarence, when did you decide to go all Arpaio on us?

The one bright spot is this:

We are not going into classrooms, into schools looking for illegal students. I find that thought repugnant and repulsive. We will never do that as long as I happen to be the sheriff here.

He’s right: it is repugnant and repulsive. But only a couple of notches lower than rhetoric that scapegoats children for our economic and criminal problems.

Pretty harsh words about the south side. I wonder what Mr. Eckstrom has to say about his friend’s rant.

  • He’s got it exactly backwards.

The best way to assure the continuation of a subculture (criminal or otherwise) is to make sure that they AREN’T assimilated.

  • Yeah, and make sure they aren’t educated too. That always keeps the crime rate down!

Bisbee was a nice town before all those polacks showed up.

  • I haven’t seen so little compassion in a state….

  • Apparently, the Sharif is not aware of the US Supreme Court decision that prohibits schools from asking about a student’s immigration status anyway. This argument is moot.

I think the sheriff’s logic is that less immigrants translates into less full jails. I am not sure if that is the case. A substantial number of immigrants pay taxes, abide every local and state law and are only trying to build a life. Unfortunately, a small contgingency of undocumented immigrants are part of cartel activity, steal cars and engage in questionable activity. Furthermore, AHCCCS pays for the births of a large number of children per year whose parents are here illegally. Once they are born, those parents can file for resident alien status as parents of naturalized citizens and recieve public aid. This pisses off people in general, mostly people on the right. What folks don’t understand, is because of the way the laws have been tweaked, no one is informed of the very low percentage of undocumented immigrants participate in questionable activity. It is lower than actual citizens. People are never told this. I also have trouble believing that not allowing immigrant children to go to school is productive for society. Yesterday, I got in an argument with one of my buddies about this, he was right.

  • This whole thing hurts my head. Our sheriff also cited a “source” saying that one in four students in Sunnyside district is an illegal. Even though Sunnyside does in no way, shape, or form keep any sort of statistics on legal status. So he just pulled the number out of his south-side, apparently.

  • Well said Earvin and Sneezy!

Earvin importantly notes that the sheriff seems to be arguing “less immigrants translates into less full jails” and less crime. All the evidence I have seen backs what Earvin says. Most are LESS likely to committ crimes in fear of having their immigrant status come to light and get deported.

What is most strange is this though. How can the Sheriff even know that immigrants are getting to his jail at all. Aren’t they handled and deported in what are very speedy federal administrative hearings? If he has undocumented immigrants in his jail, then wouldn’t they be deported shortly before or after they get adjudicated?

It appears to me that judges and not those in corrections would know a helluva lot more about how many crimes or not are comitted by undocumented immigrants.

But finally, that he would label a south-side Tucson school in this fashion is appalling. I dont care if he was a Democrat Governor of this state, he is not fit to serve. That he would openly use his position of elected office to pass of half-truths for what are political purposes that essentially demonize and demean people in our community is just irresponsible.

The other problem with lableling is deciding who actually is here illegally, and who came illegally, and who is here illegally, but could be legal if they weren’t afraid to go down to the Federal building and file some freaking paperwork. I think we group all these “undocumented immigrants” into one category. The reality is that there is a large continuum.
    SCENARIO #1
Sibling of Naturalized and Parents never got alien Status: This person is eligible for alien status, only after his parents apply and are granted alien status. Problem, Parents are guaranteed status if neither have broken law.
    SCENARIO #2
Entered on Bordercrosser visa (usually a 15 to 60 day pass) and stayed. Borrowed SSN off the internet and has lived in US over 7 years. Can pettion for legal status, pay a fine. No naturalized children.
SCENARIO #3 Paid high dollar for bordercrosser pass and came because of some type of family crisis; (abandoned kids, death in the extended family, civil litigation, voluntary witness in court, vacation) and stayed. Has been here over two years and can prove just cause that crisis requires said immigrant to remain in US.
SCENARIO #4 Came in on Student Visit to attend college. Or enrolls at UA and still without Alien Status and applies for student visa. As long as he can prove he/she is paying out of state tuition (or someone is) eligible for Alien Status.

Tell me these aren’t very common, what are we going to do, round them up and kick them out. If a 15 day border crossing pass only cost between 200-350 dollars, do you know how much less trash there would be in the Sonoran Desert throughtout the REZ? People would just cross in Nogales and take the bus, and the USA Government would make money. Entry would be way more controlled. DUUUUUHHH!!!

  • Nicely done Lebron.
