Too Clever
There is a thing occasionally called “hard linking” that is frowned upon by “Netiquitte” mavens. This is when a blogger or someone else wants to use a picture on a website and instead of uploading their own picture, they instead put a piece of code that accesses that picture from another website. At the least it is considered sloppy (even lazy) and at worst a minor form of theft, since it means that every hit on the copycat site results in bandwidth use (and the resultant costs) for the people that maintain the orginal site.
The folks over at Sonoran Alliance are wondering just how many Republicans showed up to a dinner honoring long time legislator Jack Brown. They were particularly incensed, since the dinner was actually a fundraiser for the Arizona Democratic Party. So, they have a post asking for users to call their legislators to see if they showed up. Okay, that’s the job of any partisan organ like Sonoran Alliance (or this blog, for that matter). But, here is the fun part: they wanted to feature a graphic from the event. Instead of downloading it from the Arizona Democratic Party site, they “hard linked” it.
Upon discovering this, the wags at the State Democratic party had a thousand really rude ideas of what they could replace the graphic with, since replacing their graphic would have resulted in the “hard linked” graphic being changed on Sonoran Alliance as well. Cooler heads prevailed and they replaced the picture with a large photograph of Barack Obama. This now means that the very conservative Sonoran Alliance website features a gigantic, handsome, smiling picture of our Commander-in-Chief, Barack Hussein Obama.
This may disturb los Sonorenses more than any of the other ideas the crew at the State Party had.
NB – I don’t know how long the Sonoran Alliance folks will have that shot up. I uploaded a screen shot here in case it goes away.

Not get technical, but when this is done on the web it is called hot linking. Hard Linking is used in file structures for storage drives and operating systems.
