Randy Pullen Gets a Math Lesson

Randy Pullen & Michael SteeleSo, it’s not bad enough that Randy Pullen has to go out and advocate a tax increase. You can hear a small part of his soul vaporize whenever he has to mention the phrase “sales tax hike.” It’s sad, really. Not only that, his own activists are giving him no end of grief for it.

What makes it worse is that he seems to be a bit unclear on exactly what is being raised. Check this out, from their press release Tuesday:

The Arizona Republican Party released results from a recent survey today showing strong public support for a temporary 1% statewide sales tax as part of a balanced budget approach.

Mighty nice for them to take a poll on a 1% sales tax increase. Too bad that what is being suggested is a 1 cent sales tax increase. Which, according to the snarky press release put out by the State Democratic Party later, is actually an 18% increase.

Republicans love to complain about the smart alecky press releases from the Democrats, but with material like this, can they expect anything else?

So, did the State Republican Party spend all that money on a poll just to ask the wrong question?

By the way, isn’t Pullen the treasurer of the RNC? Isn’t one of the basic requirements of the job knowing the difference between “percent” and “cents”?

  • We should not let them get away with pushing a temporary sales tax increase when the root of our problem is that when times were good they cut all manner of taxes nine years in a row, so that even in fat years everything was running on a shoestring budget– meaning that in a lean year…

This was caused by reckless and irresponsible tax cuts. And if they try to cut another tax this year (and they still may try) we should shout it out from the rooftops.

I may hold my nose and vote for this tax increase because it is necessary, yet in the long term it was so unnecessary for us to have ever gotten to this point.
