Bobby Jindal? Ay, Pobrecito.

Jack McBrayerThe take on Bobby Jindal on these here intertubes this morning was that he came off like Kenneth the Page during his presidential response last night. Yep, that is the exact comparison many are making: Kenneth the Page. Ouch. What’s worse is the speed at which this particular meme has travelled. Take for example the Facebook group dedicated to petitioning Saturday Night Live to have Jack McBrayer (the guy who plays Kenneth on 30 Rock) play Jindal on their show. The group already has over 200 members and, if the time stamps on the wall posts are to be believed, was formed only moments after Jindal finished his speech.

(It is funny to me that words like “dweeb” and “dork” are being thrown around when the speech was in response to a guy with a self-confessed love of Conan the Barbarian and Spiderman.)

Yeah, yeah, folks will say that what is important is what he had to say, not how he said it. The content of his speech isn’t getting strong reviews either and if we aren’t supposed to pay any attention to the delivery, then why don’t they have these speeches read by, say, Bobcat Goldthwait?

Before folks on my side get too excited and declare that a single speech renders Jindal’s political career over, remember Bill Clinton in 1988. His big debut before a national audience was the widely derided overlong speech he gave nominating Michael Dukakis. It is safe to say that that speech didn’t ruin his prospects in 1992.

  • That Bobby. What a kidder. Talking about the shamful response the goverment provided to the Katrina disaster. I guess he forgot who was in charge and what party controlled the purse strings.

  • The second Jindal walked onscreen I groaned “Oh God” so loud that I didn’t hear Chris Matthews say it at the same time. It was downhill from there. The ‘content’ of his speech was nothing but stale regurgitated Reagan talking points. They really need to get some new material.

  • at least Goldthwait is trying to be funny!

  • -ahem- leave us dweebs and dorks out of it, thank you…

  • “So I says to the sheriff, I says, ‘Sheriff! Why are you so mad?’ and the sheriff says, ‘Bobby, they won’t let me get in my boat’.”

I think this is an insult to Kenneth The Page.

  • Ahem.

Obama is neither a dweeb or a dork!

    He’s definitely a nerd! He hasn’t mentioned D&D once!

    8-)

And the heroic Sheriff Lee story?

Didn’t happen that way “Those boats where not allowed to get into the water when they were needed and I just found out about seven days later one of the reason boats couldn’t get in was they didn’t have enough life preservers and some of them didn’t have proof of insurance. “

  • A pretty good quote from Nate Silver at 538.com

“If it sounds like Jindal is targeting his speech to a room full of fourth graders, that’s because he is. They might be the next people to actually vote for Republicans again.”

  • I was in Atlanta 1988 (elected Jackson delegate from MD CD7 – Baltimore) during Clinton’s speech. All the delegates on the floor ingnored Clinton’s speech. When he said “In conclusion,” those who were still sitting stood up, we all turned to face the podium, and applauded.
