Live Blogging the Pima Democratic Party Reorganization Meeting
2:09 - Buisiness portion of the meeting is done. I’m outta here.
2:08 - State committee list is approved.
2:04 - Amendment seems to pass by standing vote after much discussion.
1:55 - Adam Kinsey speaks for bylaws change.
1:54 - Discussion moves on to bylaws amendment allowing other council members from other incorporated cities to have seats on the executive committee. I’m not sure I understand Rodriguez’s arguments against it.
1:53 - Amendment establishing elections procedures passes by voice vote.
1:52 - Amendment changing from 2/3 to 3/4 for adopting elections procedures fails after an overwhelming standing vote.
1:51 - Kenny Jacobs thanked me for posting during the meeting. Someone, somewhere is following this.
1:47 - Amendments passed en bloc with friendly amendments.
1:46 - Rogers moves for approval of all amendments except for the first and third.
1:42 - Rogers speaks for the provision.
1:41 - Bacal objects to provision, he only wants to include the Teen Democrats.
1:39 - Another bylaws change to allow Teen Democrats a place on the executive committee, Pat Burns wants other youth organizations whose membership includes people to young to register to vote.
1:33 - People are objecting. I suppose that this means that Ed Finklestein and Bill Johnson should be given full support of the county party.
1:23- Now the fifth amendment, which deals with the right not to incriminate ones self…wait no. Pre-primary endorsements.
1:17 - Concerns raised because of the use of credit cards, which are exempted from the provision.
1:14 - Proposed amendment to prevent the county party from going into debt without approval from the executive committee. There was concern because money was borrowed without the executive committee being aware of it.
1:13 - F. Ann Rodriguez raises an objection, but will state reservations later.
1:11 - Proposed amendment to allow elected democratic council members from South Tucson, Marana, Oro Valley and Sahuarita to select a member of the executive committee from their memberships much in the same way that the Tucson City Council, Board of Supervisors and other groups of elected officials can.
1:09 - Proposed amendment to allow bank debit card. Current provision only allows for a check to be written with two signatures. The debit card can only be used in specific circumstances.
1:07 - Objections raised because of provisions regarding voters from Ajo. Trouble is, the proxy provisions for voters from Ajo is part of a different section.
1:03 - An amendment is proposed to make the vote to establish procedures a 3/4 rather than 2/3 vote.
1:01 - Concern is being raised about “empire building” that can happen if the “election procedures manual” provisions are adopted. It is suggested that the full body be able to amend the manual. Martin points out that this is already a part of the proposal.
12:59 - Now Martin says, “Has everyone read these?” Everyone says “Yes.” Of course, this doesn’t stop people from being confused every time the text is referenced.
12:58 - Despite the amendments being mailed to everyone, people are acting as though it is the first time they’ve seen them. Happens every time.
12:56 - Martin Bacal introduces bylaws amendments. Surprise! There are typos!
12:53 - Jeff Rogers takes over as chair. Vince refers to “handing over the podium.” Vince, it’s a lectern.
12:49 - County Recorder F. Ann Rodriguez speaks. She announces that Extreme Home Makeover will be coming to Tucson.
12:42 - Reconvenes with remarks from Ken Jacobs, executive director.
11:36 - Lunch break!
11:34 - Remarks from Bill Reisner will be posted later.
11:21 - Vince is calling up Bill Reisner to talk about Election Integrity.
11:17 - Sam Wierczynski, former Maricopa County chair and outgoing real estate commissioner, speaks.
11:15 - Yep, Donna moves for acclamation again.
11:14 - Barbara Tellman nominated for recording secretary by Andrea Dalessandro.
11:13 - Another vote by acclamation. -Yawn- At least Donna didn’t make the motion.
11:12 - Martin Bacal nominated for corresponding secretary by Rep. Phil Lopes.
11:10 - Johnathan Rothchild, current County Party Treasurer, nominated by Vera Berkman. Vera admires his “probity” because “otherwise, we would all go to jail.”
11:09 - Donna Wangler moves to close, again.
11:08 - Laura Elias de la Torre seconds Olvera nomination.
11:07 - David Olvera nominated for second vice chair by Paul Eckerstrom.
11:06 - Nominations closed, motion by Donna Wangler, of course.
11:05 - Katie Bolger nominated for first vice chair, by Diana Rhoads.
11:04 - Rogers elected by acclamation. Video will be posted later.
10:58 - Nominations closed.
10:57 - Downing: “Jeff and I talked. It’s very hard for men to talk.”
10:56 - Nomination seconded by Ted Downing (!).
10:53 - Jeff Rogers nominated for chair by Donna Branch Gilby
10:52 - Councilmembers Trasoff and Glassman spoke. Video later.
10:41 - Word on the room: we are at an auditorium at Rincon High School. Room about two-thirds full, no one is sitting in the front. What are these people, Episcopalians?
10:35 - Legislators speaking, will post video later.
10:33 - Mohur Sidhwa, out going vice chair is speaking. Mostly thank yous.
10:31 - Vince said “Fire in the Belly.” Last time I heard someone say that at a Democratic Party meeting, it was followed by a sexist statement that led Yuma County to vote for me and I got elected second vice chair of the state party.
10:27 - Vince Rabago is talking. He said that he wants to talk about “this year’s races.” I thought we were post racial now.

Excuse if I am wrong here..
But aren’t many of those incorporated cities and towns to get a seat on the Exec Board have elections not held by party?

Ed Finklestein is still around?? (and back to being a democrat?)
I was in the University Democrats back in 1987 and we hosted a debate between the Democratic Mayoral candidates, which included Volgy and Huerta (and a couple others ). Ed Finkelstein had kept claiming he was going to run, but hadn’t filed. He came to the debate, upset that he wasn’t invited. We told him that he wasn’t officially a candidate. He was a bit miffed but we stuck by our guns…. The next day he filed to run.. AS a Republican.

I truly appreciate your on the spot blow by blow reporting of events. Keep doing it. How about a little reportage from DGT?

It is true that the incorporated towns in question have nonpartisan elections. In fact, all cities have nonpartisan elections except for Tucson (a fact that Sen. Paton reminds us of frequently). I strongly believe that we as a party should be more inclusive of these cities and towns and that by granting representation to the Marana, Oro Valley, Sahuarita, and South Tucson Councils, we do just that. The fact that these officials are elected in bipartisan elections, should not discount what they bring or could potentially bring to the table. Here’s why:
1) Excluding them from representation on the Executive Committee based on a decision that they had no control over, seems unjust.
2) As a party, we need to be more inclusive of these municipalities. As their populations increase, we need to make sure that their voices are being heard.
3) Today’s school board and town council members are tomorrow’s state legislators, county supervisors, and corporation commissioners. We as a party would be well served to include “down ballot” officials as part of our long-term strategic planning.
Thanks again for live blogging, Tedski. We had 211 PCs in attendance and I’m sure that the other 200 were following along on R cubed.
