Conservatives Just Not Letting It Go, Part 2
Folks on the right are ticked off that Barack Obama will be appearing in an issue of The Amazing Spiderman. Yep, this is what it has come to. Check out what Debbie Schlussel says on her blog. Money quote:
Once, comic books were against Nazis and Hitler and were very up front in supporting America’s fight against them. But those days are over.
I hate to break it to Schlussel, but there is a good reason why super heroes don’t spend too much time on Adolf Hitler anymore. That’s right, as well all know, Hitler was killed when his bunker was set ablaze by the Human Torch and Toro back in Invaders #41.
(I woulder if Schlussel is still angry that Ruby Keeler isn’t in movies anymore either.)
Schlussel and fellow ranter Ken Shepherd seem to be more angry that Obama is being given anything that smacks of a positive appearance. But their assertion that comic book superheroes are some sort of left-wing plot is ridiculous. Sure, there is plenty of that. Heck, the era of comics that Schlussel mourns the passage of included a radically pro-New Deal Superman. It also includes figures like Frank Miller, whose Dark Knight was a right wing fantasy if there ever was one and it is considered the definitive version of Batman in comics and the movies even 20 years on. And don’t even get me started on his 300.
Also, costumed vigilantes are a pretty illiberal idea, doncha think?
I suppose we will be treated to four (or hopefully eight) years of this stupidity: right wing pundits complaining when that Barack Hussein Obama is portrayed as anything that doesn’t fit their narrow view of him. Anything positive is evidence of pervasive media bias. Looking at their dismal numbers right now, they should worry that it isn’t only the media that’s biased against them.

Read her comment a bit more carefully, Ted:
Her problem is that comic book heroes used to fight against Nazis and Hitler, but that ‘those days are over.’
Apparently she would therefore have no problem if comic books again fought against her version of evil. Since Obama’s inclusion is what brought about the comment, she must believe that the comic errs in not portraying him as ‘evil,’ to be fought against.
Ergo, she is comparing Obama to Hitler.
I wonder if she would feel happier if the next edition has Spidey shaking hands with Osama bin Laden.

Just wait until “Watchmen” comes out. I can’t wait to fight off the probable “Ozymandias = Obama” reference.
