Gallardo Out!
Arizona Guardian reports that out going House Minority Whip Steve Gallardo has decided not to get sworn into his seat on Monday to pursue other projects.
There may not be enough PC’s in his district to meet the threshold for them to come up with a list, as had gone on in recent appointments here in Pima County. This means that the appointment will go straight to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. The board will likely defer to the sole Democrat, Mary Rose Wilcox, to make the decision in the matter.
Names that have already circulated for Gallardo’s replacement include Avondale Mayor Marie Lopez Rogers and Tolleson Mayor Adolfo F. Gámez.
What are the anti-immigration zealots going to do with their “Goofy Gallardo” merchandise?
UPDATE: Democratic activist Lydia Hernandez is being mentioned as a candidate. Hernandez is close to the Miranda Brothers, which should cause indigestion among some members of the Democratic caucus.

So does this mean that Gallardo wants to run for Secretary of State as rumored? How does he match up against Ken Bennett?

It terrifies me that the Board of Supervisors gets to essentially pick whoever they want.

Someone’s taking the “Resign to Run” law a bit far.

Maybe his replacement as whip will come from Baja. Lord knows we are underrepresented in the leadership…

The young activists and Latino base is pulling for Martin Quezada. He is a lawyer and community advocate. No more inside baseball politics.

Atticus-
You said, “…Board of Supervisors gets to essentially pick whoever they want.”
That’s not correct. The PCs in the LD recommend a slate of three candidates from which the BOS must choose.

There are not enough PCs (the required number is 30) for them to be able to recommend their list of three, as Tedski pointed out in his post.

Speaking of PCs: there are way too many orphan precincts here in Pima County.
