A Return to the Bad Old Days?

Freeport McMorAn Copper and Gold is laying off 1,500 workers from its mine in Morenci. This spurred a series of rumors in the area that the Arizona National Guard would be called in to assist the company for a mass eviction of workers from company housing.
My old friend Walter Mares from the Copper Era called [...]

There’s a Football Game Tomorrow

Barack Obama will be having a Super Bowl party at the White House tomorrow where the invitees are ten members of congress. Among them, our own Raúl Grijalva and Trent Franks.
Franks is likely invited because he “represents” the Cardinals since his district includes Glendale. Who knows, maybe an encounter with Obama will change his ways. [...]

Like We Needed Those Colleges Anyway

I saw the headline in Arizona Guardian this morning: “Budget Finished!”
I keep thinking of that bit in Don’t Tell Mom the Baby Sitter’s Dead. The kids go skeet shooting with the dishes. After destroying all the dishes, one of them says, “Dishes are done, man.”

That About Sums It Up

An elephantine correspondent alerted me to this photo of Randy Pullen and Joe Arpaio from the New Times coverage of this weekend’s Republican meeting.

The only comment that my correspondent wanted to make is that over Arpaio’s shoulder is Joe Sweeney.

It Doesn’t Totally Ruin Our Fun

Well, the RNC has elected Michael Steele their new chairman. Chip Saltzman (he of “Barack the Magic Negro” fame) didn’t even make a race of it after his support evaporated, but Katon Dawson made a good run at it, even leading on the fourth ballot.
You’d think that someone like Dawson would have made good fodder [...]

Amen, Brother

I know that a lot of y’all can’t stand Andrew Sullivan. There are many times that he infuriates me. Even when he does, though, it makes me think. But, check out this post that he did as part of an ongoing discussion about Ted Haggard and broader questions about religion and homosexuality. Money quote:
This is [...]

Scratch One

Mitch McConnell at the RNC meeting this morning, speaking of the current state of the Republican party:
You can walk from Canada to Mexico and from Maine to Arizona without ever leaving a state with a Democratic governor.

Three Things That Have Bugged Me This Week

Okay, three things that for reasons unfathomable I have neglected to comment on this week.
Uno – I know that there was some consternation from some of the królewięta after Paul Eckerstrom’s election this week, but some of the rumors I have heard have been downright ridiculous. My favorite is this sequence of contradictory knocks against [...]

Blagojevich…Serbo-Croatian for Ex-Governor

The Illinois state senate voted unanimously to remove Rod Blagojevich from office. The governor is now a guy named Pat Quinn, who I am assuming has less interesting hair.
The state senate also voted unanimously to bar Blagojevich ever to hold public office in Illinois again. I remember that a similar provision in Arizona’s impeachment law [...]

Dispatch from Cloud Cuckoo Land

And speaking of the student protest, now is the perfect time to refer all of you to Tom Jenney’s opinion piece in the Arizona Guardian, which claims, according to the title, “UA Students Protest on Your Dime.”
(Why pick on U of A students, by the way? The protest had students from all three schools. Is [...]
