She Said It, Not Me

Ann DayFrom this morning’s Arizona Daily Star:

Pima County Supervisor Ann Day, a Republican, suggested [Janet]Napolitano’s departure would “leave the Republicans to swim in their own blood.”

“Things would unravel,” said Day, who served for 10 years in the state Senate with [Jan] Brewer. “She’d undo every positive thing that’s been done — all-day kindergarten, university funding … state shared revenues.”

Furthermore, said Day, Brewer “won’t push the Legislature. She’ll go wherever it directs her. That combination — Brewer and the conservative leadership — would not look good for the state.”

  • on Channel 13 Thursday night, they interviewed her and Peter Goudinoff. Peter was much nicer in his comments about Brewer than Ann. He did back the notion that she was more of a follower than a leader.

(Dr Goudinoff was my fave Poli-Sci prof)

  • Man, that is not a flattering picture. Maybe it just looks weird on my screen, but it’s not good.

  • Well, let’s wait and see if Governor Napolitano indeed leaves the Democrats to this Republican Jan Brewer. It’s all up to Janet now.

  • Ann is a terrific public servant and a straight shooter who worked closely with Brewer in Phoenix and thus knows her well. More people in public life should exhibit Ann’s candor and class. As a state senator and a supervisor, she has been a “work horse,” not a “show horse.” She is also one of the few people in politics unafraid to call them as she sees them. That fact is the main reason those in the GOP who value ideology over action sought to dump her with the wholly unqualified Joe Higgins as their standard-bearer. My hunch is that her sterling reputation is also why we Democrats could not find anyone to take her on in the general election this year.

  • I’m at the State Committee right now, where I can see you across the auditorium (Hi Ted!).

Before the start of the meeting a guy came up to where some of us had gathered to chat and told us that the Yellow Sheet said that Governor-to-be Brewer intends to rescind Gov. Napolitano’s executive order granting benefits to same-sex couples immediately.

  • wow, plans from a person that says she is not making plans….. maybe this will convince Janet to stay.

  • I can’t believe that the Governor would leave the people who worked so very hard to get her elected, three times, to advance her own career.

I realize she is a politician and always thinking about the next big thing for her – but honestly, shame on her for leaving us behind. Shame on her for leaving us with Jan Brewer and a more radicalized Republican majority in the legislature. There are plenty of other people just as qualified as she is to head Homeland Security and her ties to border security are strained at best. Shame. Shame. Shame.

  • From what I hear, Ann is a bit of a nut job. She has some sort of phobia about elevators….

  • Pat: it’s not your web browser she’s just throwing us Governor Tim Kaine brow ;)

  • I knew that would be among Brewer’s first acts. Prop 102 couldn’t possibly be enough for them. I also expect any number of incredibly restrictive and harmful anti-choice bills to cross her desk early in session. We’re going to be forced back into accepting federal abstinence-only funding again, women will be subjected to draconian laws about what they can’t do with their own bodies, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw measures make it to the ballot through the legislature like those rejected by South Dakota and Colorado voters this year. That last one won’t have anything to do with Brewer, of course, but she’ll be its staunchest supporter outside the Legislature.

  • I should also note that the federal abstinence-only funding wouldn’t require legislative action. Rejecting it was entirely an executive branch decision, so reinstating it would likely be the same.

Hopefully the 111th Congress will follow the science and severely reduce, eliminate and transform that funding.

  • Michael, you are right. There will be payback to the Center for Arizona Policy….we would be LUCKY if it was the Goldwater Institute…seriously…but it will be the Center…god help women’s rights, minority rights, gay rights.

Oh…and did anyone watch Washington Week with Gwen Iffle, one guest said the exact same thing that I have been about Homeland Security.

The message…who would want it? 17 agencies that dont get along together…you are known for what happens bad on your watch and you get NO credit for what is good. Last, immigration is the key issue and Homeland Security is ground zero.

It is a thankless job…and only one that a person without political ambition would want.

    Advisors???? are you listening????

  • If Napolitano leaves, the potential damage to the state gives me chills. The legislature, with Brewer’s help, will be looking to cut, cut, and cut some more. And they’re gonna start with education. Next will be health care. The amount of bad bills the legislature tries to pass has been astounding. For evidence, take a look at Janet’s veto record.

For what it’s worth, a staunchly Democratic friend of mine lives in Ann Day’s district and has contacted her office several times on different matters. They said that Day has repeatedly gone above and beyond to help however she can.

  • on that ch. 13 interview Goudinoff also said that Brewer “never showed any depth”.

    i’m scared.

  • There are people who live with far worse for much longer to make gains. Who is afraid of a few casualties over the next couple of years? We all are but we will survive and I believe come out stronger.

I never said it would be pretty, but giving the state GOP what they want at this point in time is just what the doctor ordered for the long run. Heck, even the moderate Republicans agree.
