Hey, any of you remember the chisme back in 1993? Word was that this Vice Chair of the Democratic Party named Janet Napolitano was contemplating a primary run against Dennis DeConcini. Soon, she was appointed US Attorney for Arizona. The rumors at the time were that Bill Clinton bumped her up to save DeConcini a primary challenge.
Now, what the rumor is that Napolitano’s appointment is being done by Barack Obama to save John McCain a strong challenge in 2010.
The best way to complete the parallel would be to have McCain decide not to run after all.

I think Governor Napolitano should tell the President-elect the only way she will take the Homeland Security job would be if he displayed bipartisanship by appointing Ms. Brewer ambassador to some small and unimportant spot with a good climate. Then Terry Goddard would be the constitutional successor to the post of governor.
