Decree of Canard Dissolution

So, you are watching a soccer game (because you all do, of course) and some thug in shorts tries to kneecap an opposing player. The referee ejects the offending player and whichever semi-literate yobbo Fox Soccer Channel has doing the “color” says: “The team will be more compact with ten men and will actually play better.”

Uh, yeah. A few years ago, Four Four Two did a piece where they found out that, guess what, teams that play with a man down lose. No surprise there. They then noted that if it was so good to be a man down, why didn’t coaches just pull a guy off the field and play with ten guys?

I hear something similar from Republicans and their allies in the press in this election. Somehow, the worst thing for the Democratic Party is to have the House, Senate and the Presidency. This will automatically lead to “overreach” and they will be unable to govern, and this will lead to major losses in the next election. Democrats will be sorry that they had all this power. Republicans will do far better as an opposition party, with no little or no ability to advance their proposals.

This leads me to a question: then why did they bother contesting the election at all?

  • Humorous and classic apt example of poorly constructed spin that so frequently comes from the right

  • The denial is the best part.

A better line might have been:

“Obviously we have lost touch with the average American voter, and have some work to do. We plan on taking this opportunity to step back and reevaluate our platform, politics and methods to better align ourselves with the views of those we serve.

We look forward to working with the Democrats…blah blah blah.”

    Instead, they chose:

“Good! We never wanted your fancy “majority status” or your “power” anyway!!”

    Pure JEENYUS.

  • Oh my god! We fell right into their trap!

  • Maybe McCain does have us “right where he wants” us???BWAAAH

  • Maybe they need to take “responsibility” for their poor showing (at least McCain did) and stop whining while “playing the victim.”
Honestly, I was at several Republican-dominated events this week (veterans’ stuff) and the whining was unbelievable. Not that it doesn’t hurt to lose — yeah it does — but Jumpin’ Haysoos, the Repugs have built their whole political dynasty on denigrating any American who has the gall to say their life isn’t perfect. Phil Gramm, anyone?

  • Of course, another question is: then why did they desire a “permanent Republican majority”? And what about their first 6 years with Bush/Cheney? They were perfectly happy with no checks and balances when it was in their favor. Unfortunately, so many Congressional Democrats lean so far to the right that it will be a miracle if anything even slightly progressive happens in the next two years.

  • At moments during the current euphoria I reflect that I have survived Nixon, Reagan, Bush & Bush. I think the folks on the other side will be okay once they get used to the idea that it is someone else’s turn now. After all, they survived Johnson, Carter & Clinton. Now they have to learn to play fair again.

  • It’s a mess out there and no one from the Republican party really wants to take responsibility for fixing it. All the hard choices and tough-to-deal-with-must-do-policies-to-save-the-country will dump on the Democratic president and congress. Just like with FDR, the Republicans will use the solutions to clean up THEIR mess against the Democrats. And boy will they bitch about it.

The majority of Americans breathed life into what might have been the end to our country had McCain won, by electing Obama and more Democrats to the congress, but there will be a stiff price future generations will pay for this rescue in mean rhetoric from the right.

  • There are Republican Party Principles that are sensible and respectable, just like their are principals embedded in the Democratic Party that may not make sense from certain points of view….Let us not dump all over the Republicans, lets dump on the fanatical right wing pundits who all totally suck…..we need to work with Republicans, we don’t need to “work” with Sean Hannity and co’, they are now irrelevant….the problem is by not responding we make them strong…..we need to vigilant in our smashing of these fanatics letting them know they represent the largest concentration of rat-bastardism in human history.
