Sullivan’s Take

From Andrew Sullivan’s live blog of last night’s McCain speech:

10.30 pm. We have half an hour left of this convention and I still don’t know what he is proposing to do.

Hey, let’s be fair here: McCain did propose more oil drilling. That’ll solve everything, right?

  • Drill…drill…drill…drill

    Uh…yeah.

There is not a shred of evidence that more drilling will decrease gas prices.

Oh..and I am just dying for someone to please tell me…PLEASE tell me.

Why on earth do they constantly push nuclear power?

I need a real, strategic reason. I think I am fairly astute at politics and I am still dumbfounded.

Where does the nuclear power stuff come from?

For instance, has it been poll tested and found to be popular???? Or is this something they keep throwing in until people believe it?

Nuclear power, apart from environmental concerns, is among the most expensive power to construct and build. It takes a decade to build a plant and once built, enormous government subsidies to entice companies to operate.

Is this more or less government?

    Am I stupid?

  • You would think that by now the stupid guys drilling for oil, making nuclear waste, drilling for Natural gas and coal would have started to invest in solar energy. If they are too stupid to diversify their businesses then let them all go broke. (I’m talking owners here not the workers)

  • The changing scenic pictures on the backdrop screen didn’t make sense to us at first. Then, it hit us: those are the places they want to drill for oil! So, we made it a macabre game. When the St. Louis arch came up on the screen, we yelled: drill here, drill now! When the snow capped mountains took their turn: drill here, drill now! Sadly, you all get the picture.

  • I thought I heard a change of “drill baby drill” during that convention–or was I hallucinating?

  • Bridget,

Great points…I think they know the following. As fossil fuels get scarcer, the price goes up…whether demand goes up dramatically or not. It is why the oil companies are making more money…as long as they can stay in the game and produce more oil, they will continue to get higher and higher prices for it…and more profit. There is absolutely no incentive for them to invest in anything else.

Last, they know very well that the government will subsidize them to do this and that when things get just too costly and demand drops, they will get massive subsidies to do other things like you state so well.

    Gretchen,

Yeh, it was like something off of Rush Limbaugh or Hannity and Combs. They were chanting drill baby drill…thinking Alaska Refuge?

Can anyone help me with my nuclear question?
