If the Real Thing Don’t Do the Trick, You’d Better Make Up Something Quick

Ann and Nancy Wilson, Rolling Stone CoverSince Sarah Palin’s nickname in high school was “Barracuda,” her campaign has decided that the song “Barracuda” should be her theme. This has happened much to the chagrin of Ann and Nancy Wilson of the band Heart, since they wrote and performed the darned thing. They have sent a cease and dessist letter.

I don’t understand why Palin would want the song associated with her in the first place. I mean, does she really want to be compared to the protagonist in the song?

You’re lying so low in the weeds
I bet you’re gonna ambush me
You’d have me down on my knees
Now wouldn’t you, barracuda?

Of course, this is the party that thought that “Born in the USA” (a song about a veteran who can’t find a job in his economically blighted hometown) would have been a great theme for Ronald Reagan.

NB – Let this be the only time I link to TMZ.com.

I wish they would cease and desist too. The song blows.

Apparently the Francis Scott Key Foundation has also sent a cease and desist order to the DNC, asking them not to us the Star Spangled Banner. Yes, just kidding. :)

Barracuda is about the only song I can play all the way through on Guitar Hero…

When I heard it played last night as the balloons dropped and the “rudy” theme song ended, I too, was in shock – since the lyrics in the song are not… well ummm… very politically themed towards the McCain/Palin ticket.

Steve P, I don’t know about everyone else here but I’m in a peeved mood today so take your stupid joke and shove it.

I served my country proudly in the US Navy for 10 years. I love America with all my heart and I am a Democrat. The neo-cons have coopted patriotism to push an authoritarian and anti-democratic agenda on the country. They’ve never fooled me for a second.

I’m truly sorry they’ve bamboozled you and I sincerely hope you enlighten yourself to the reality of what is happening in your own country and the danger to your freedom that your political heroes pose.

Until then, step the f**k off on my patriotism, and that of any other Democrat’s. Got it?

These two women, Ann and Nancy Wilson were a couple of the first pioneers of women in rock and roll. Too bad I was too young when they were touring to hit one of their concerts, but I have always been a fan.

I think they made their point by asking them to stop using their song–not that a Republican would show an ounce of respect to anyone outside of their party and actually stop playing it. I think then that we should embrace the lyrics and keep repeating how Ms. Palin likes songs about her being on her knees. There is more than one way to skin an elephant.

Do they pay royalties when they use the song?

I know why Republicans tend to decide whether they like a song or not based on the title and maybe the good riff that gets on all the news stories that feature the song.

It’s because they probably never listen to rock and roll.

It comes from the devil, you know.

    Donna,

Thank you for your service. I mean that.

No one has co-opted patriotism. It’s just that the anti-winning Democrats (not all Democrats) have put politics above victory, which is disgusting to most Americans. We should not give up winning a war so Democrats can win the White House.

Authoritarian and anti-democratic? Your party is the one aborting 2.5 babies per minute. Our party lets those kids grow up to vote. Also, your party disenfranchised both Floridians and Michiganians during the primaries, not to mention military ballots in 2000. It is your party telling us what we can drive, where we can smoke, that we have to join unions, that there can’t be school choice, that we can’t pray in public, that evolution is the only theory. It is your party supporting judges overturning the votes of the people. Give me a break on authoritarianism. Seriously.

Last, are you trying to quell my free speech with your last comment? I would never do that to you just because I disagree with you. I support freedom of speech, which you helped provide. You should support it too.

Steve, there are so many strawmen in your post it should be declared a fire hazard. My point stands. The neo-cons have engaged in a cynical strategy of exploiting and perverting patriotism to divide and conquer the citizens of the US. They are a parasite on your party and I pray that rank-and-file Republicans (who I believe love this country as much as I do – though we may disagree on policy issues) will purge them once and for all.

Ummmm. It was right after they signed with Mushroom Records, and the record label put an add in RS saying that they were “Lesbian Sisters”, I guess Ann got really pissed after some reporter asked her about it and thus “Barracuda” was born.

I wonder if Palin knows this?

Steve: It is your party who is telling us that government should be limited, unless of course we disagree with your version of morality–then of course government should step in and dictate our behavior—- All the while engaging in said behavior all along but on the sly. Encouraging women to carry their babies to full term, and refusing to even think about encouraging any type of pregnancy prevention programs with the exception of those programs that don’t work, but then refusing programs to fund prenatal health care, pediatric health care, and support to these women whom you then shun as popping out babies and having no morals. Yep, you’re sure the patriotic lot, aren’t you.

It is so much easier to care about an unborn baby than one who is crying, defectating, having colic, breaking things, or failing in school. One takes no responsibility for the outcome in the first but is free to criticize and condemn the woman trying to deal with her situation. The hypocrisy of the far “Christian” right on this subject is sickening. I never forgot hearing the late unlamented Jesse Helms decrying the sociological implications of school lunch programs and milk for kids, and then in the next breath contending that cigarettes and the tobacco industry were vital to all of us. What a screwed up political party! Sarah Palin no doubt will reap what she has sown in Alaska. I just hope most of us are not too blind to get it.

We sure are “winning” the hearts/minds of the Iraqis by continuing to occupy their country and setting up permanent bases. Boy–here in the USA we sure would love it if a foreign power came here an occupied our country for 5+ years. Is that “winning” the war?

Oh wait–I forgot, didn’t President Bush tell us in May 2003 or 2002 (it was so long ago I forgot the year) that we won the war with that great photo op?

    Great point, Georgia!

on another point: Abstinence-only sex education has never worked as well as informed and sober discussion of sex and its consequences. If a girl making a big choice on the cusp of womanhood has been denied relevant, scientific information on human sexuality and disease-preventative measures, then using the sanctity of life to force her down a path she may not be ready for is a cruelty that the Republican Party wants to legislate and judiciate down our throats as a nation.

I hate to be so hardcore about how awful this woman is, but she picked the fight, insulting community organizers, insulting Democrats who believe in sensible solutions and bragged about screwing up. She sold the Jet for a loss, and the Gov. of Alaska is probably the only Governor in the Country who legitimately needs a Private Jet. Alaska is enormous and flying to and from the Mainland is necessary from time to time, second, she actually wants Oil and Corporate America to get richer. She has NO judgement, flying around the country 33 weeks pregnant to give speeches, covering up both her and her daughter’s pregnancies. Find me one OBGYN who says it is a good idea to fly around the country as 44 year old pregnant person 33 weeks along? This is horrible….this is manufactured popularity to a person who doesn’t deserve it….at all.

Steve P–What an asshole. Funny, the only people who I personally know who have had abortions are Republican women who got pregnant out of wedlock and were too embarrassed to admit having sex, or who just didn’t want another child. Now that is screwed up.

Blame men for abortions–I do. And until every guy who causes an unwanted pregnancy is held accountable for his actions I will continue to blame men and ensure women have the right to protect themselves from being saddled with a child they can’t afford/want.
