Yep, He Went There…

Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, as quoted in The Hill:
Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they’re a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they’re uppity.

Had he just hopped out of the General Lee when he said this? Unbelievable.

I have no reason to believe Westmoreland is hostile to people of color. I assume he was using the word to mean simply “haughty” and did not know of the word’s etymology.
In the late 90’s a councilman in Washington, DC used the word niggardly when referring to budget negotiations. He was roundly criticized for using the word correctly because the word contained what sounded like the n word.
I realize the blogosphere is where we assume people’s motives, but I’ll give Westmoreland a pass.

I love how he acted like he didn’t know what the significance of the word uppity is. I grew up in Maryland, which is considered a Dixie state by barely a hair, and I always knew what it meant. Westmoreland is from Georgia, so there’s no wiggle room for ambiguity on his part. He might as well have called Obama the n word.
Have I mentioned how much I hate these people?

Having grown up in the Jim Crow south, I will explain this to those who are younger and western.
The right wing has tried “scary nigger” on Obama by association. Remember Reverand Wright? Oh, how soon we forget.
“Scary nigger” doesn’t seem to resonate with those independents in the so-called center, the voters everyone is fighting for.
“Uppity nigger” worked for the Clinton supporters but the word used was “elitist.” We all know, of course, that an elitist black person is an “uppity nigger.”
So, the right wing is using “uppity nigger” as their smear probably until November because it has already proved to be more effective than “scary nigger.”
Oh, yeah, quick education in racism for you young westerners. There are really only three kinds of “niggers” that I can think of. There are the “scary niggers” and the “uppity niggers” that we have already covered. The only other kind is a “good nigger,” one who keeps his head down and knows his place. Most racists would tell you there are not too many of those left.
Stop dancing around the issue and being afraid to use the word “nigger.” We all know what is this is about.
Call an ace an ace.
