Arpaio’s Numbers Slipping
Joe Arpaio often touts his high approval ratings, which he likes to give as betweent 80 and 90 percent, as justification for his policies. This comes from the early part of the century (I say that because it sounds like a lot longer ago), but is not borne out by numbers taken more recently.
A Cronkite-Eight Poll of Maricopa County residents gave Arpaio a stunning 83% approval rating (and a 16% disapproval rating) back in January of 2000. More recent polls show something quite different. A poll released in April gave Arpaio’s favorable/unfavorable as 59/36. Still strong, but probably not the stratospheric numbers he likes to tout, and definitely not the near-unanamous stamp of approval that he claims.

Too bad that Dan Saban isn’t a stronger candidate. Despite being a knuckle-dragging conservative, I would love to vote against Emperor Joe.

If Valley municipal office holders, Latino leaders, civil libertatians and the Arizona Democratic Party could get together with Republican business leaders for big money backing (cf., the RTA vote), we could be rid of Joe Arpaio once and for all — for the good of all. He is by no means invincible.

Exurban,
I suggest to you that Dan Saban is a good candidate - and it takes some serious you know what to stand up to the Arpaio machine. I don’t know about the rest of the valley, but I’ve seen Saban signs up all over the west valley. Also, his people have been going door to door in my neighborhood - which is impressive to me, because outside of one LD House member not one other candidate has even left a door hanger. If you want to get rid of Joe, stop by Saban’s site and pony up some $$ - that is unless your worried Old Joe might come looking for you.

Exurban, you might be surprised at how progressive Saban is. When elected, he will do whacky things like prioritizing better food and medical care for inmates, and enhancing communication with other law enforcement agencies.
Wow.
He is almost a socialist, now that I think about it. Fiscal conservative values, and championing human rights.
Yeah, you are right. That is a pretty weak 32 year body of work to stand on.

Sardog, I don’t think that Saban is some perfidious lib-rul, nor did I claim so in my comment. I’m simply disappointed that his campaign hasn’t made more headway against the Joe’s silly antics.
(I would have thought you’d be happy to see a Republican who is sick of Arpaio… maybe not.)
