A Moment of Brilliance
In an action seemingly designed to warm Tony Cani’s heart, Republican candidate Gene Chewning purchased Joe Sweeney’s 2006 web address out from under him. I haven’t seen any of Sweeney’s lit from this year, so I don’t know if he is still listing that as his URL.
I’m not a big fan of Chewning, but I gotta admire this.

I’m surprised Sweeney knows how to use a computer. Then again, he probably realized that the internet is a great place to spread his racist garbage and figured he should learn. Smart and hilarious move by Chewning.

Wow! Who knew he had it in him?

I did see a Sweeney card this year with that website on it.
Actually, I would like to know why you aren’t a fan of Chewning, aside from the fact that he is a Republican and running against your lord and master Grijalva. He isn’t a country club Republican, he works in the Barrio with the poor, he’s a combat veteran, he’s fluent in Spanish, he’s a Christian, and he has put his life on the line for what he believes in. Can you give a non-snarky answer? Or is the real truth that you are just a political hack who can’t see beyond party labels.
By the way, give us some of the details of your upcoming trip to Denver.

Well…I’m not a fan because he’s running against Raul. He seems to be a decent guy. I disagree with him on a number of policy issues.
“Lord and master”? Geez, who’s being the hack now, Rusty?
Still waiting for that appology for calling my brother a drunk, by the way.
Ted.

Ted, did you know that the Tucson Citizen endorsed me (Gene Chewning) in the Republican primary for the U.S. House in District 7?
Tuesday’s (07/28/2008) Tucson Citizen titled: “Our Opinion: Chewning embraces basic Republican principles” The citizen stated that “Chewning is a prototypical Republican who has thought through the issues. The Tucson Citizen endorses Gene Chewning in the Republican primary for the U.S. House in District 7.”
Also last Tuesday (07/15/2008) the Citizen ran a good article on me titled: Candidate Chewning: People first, not party. http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/ss/byauthor/90950
By the way, I do enjoy Rum, Romanism and Rebellion & the Tedski comments.

At the LD30 Republican clean elections forum, Sweeney gave me lit that was leftover from 2006.
Unfortunately, I threw out the evidence.

Rusty,
You say that Gene is a “Christian,” as if that’s a good thing.

Rusty,
Chewning’s site is still under construction but I clicked on the Issues tab and saw future headings regarding “Right to Life” and “Family Values”. I’ve come to regard those kind of things as the markers of a religious fundamentalist authoritarian with an inordinate interest in what bridles people are putting on their genitals, to borrow Sweeney’s creative phrasing.
Quite honestly, one Trent Franks is more than enough in the AZ delegation. And Raul Grijalva is one of the most progressive and pro-environment voices we have in Congress. Not only would it be a loss for Arizona if he were gone, it would be for America as well.

One would like to know more detail about candidate Chewnings service in this long list of dangerous “hot spots”; it certainly suggests a high level of personal courage, as opposed say to the vain posturing of Jonathan Paton.
That being said, there’s very little for a principled Democrat not to like about Raul Grijalva, not only because of his stands on the important issues, but also because he is an experienced politician who has proved hmself to be an effective and productive member of Congress with a lot of innovative ideas.
It is well that the Republicans have a good candidate in this race, but there is absolutely no compelling reason I can think of for voters of either party to consider a change in Dist. 7.

Ted,
The lord and master comment is based upon my seeing you greet Raul Grijalva several times (Yes, we have been at many events together and we have even talked). Every time, you have greeted him with an adulation that I expect of someone who has never seen their congressman before, not someone who sees and talks to him regularly. As Tom Landry, former Dallas Cowboys coach said about excessive celebration in the end zone, “Don’t act like it’s the first time you have even been there.” I consider my comment snarky, but not falling under the classification of party hack, especially since I intend to vote for at least one Democrat this election.
As for an apology to your brother. He is an elected public official, who had to be pulled off another person by state employees at the state house. I think he owes us an explanation and apology. I do know some questioned if he had been drinking. If he wasn’t, then we have to ask if he has some serious anger management issues.
Andy and Donna. Yes, I do consider being a Christian a good thing. As you know, Tedski is also a Christian.
P.S. Tedski, lest you start getting paranoid about meeting and talking to red heads who like the Dallas Cowboys, no one considers me a red head and I’m not a Dallas Cowboy fan. As an aside, I consider you an intelligent conversationalist when you aren’t in your snarky R cubed mode.

Rusty, I don’t have a problem with anyone being a Christian. I have a problem with religious fundamentalist authoritarians. Try to keep up.
As for Tedski seeming slightly awed in the presence of Rep. Grijalva, he’s not alone in that. Some people have the ability to inspire others and command respect. People light up when they enter the room. Others are left on the sidelines grousing and whining about it. The kids have an expression for them: Haters.

As a democrat not lucky enough to be part of Raul’s gravy train I say to Gene - why not? I’ll think about you in November.
August 3rd, 2008 at 10:18 am
“nobody important” — “not lucky enough to be part of Raul’s gravy train…” What gravy train might that be?
You offer him a bribe he refused? What? Are you a lobbyist who cant sell to him?
What a crummy comment. I think I heard you whine.
