A Roll In the Hay

“Hat Tip” (to use the official blogistan jargon) to Wally Edge (can I call him Wall-E for a good pop culture reference?) noticed something goofy about Sydney Hay’s finance reports.

Anyone remember back in April when Hay was claiming that she had raised an astounding $100,000 in one night? Edge (but not Bono) checked her newly minted reports and found that something didn’t quite jive:

Hay showed she raised $95K in the second quarter, but that number creates a severe credibility gap for Hay and her campaign. Hay’s campaign issued a release the first week of April saying they started off the quarter with a bang and a $100K single event with Barry Goldwater Jr. Either Hay’s campaign completely misrepresented the event of there is missing money somewhere.

Maybe she’s just bad with big numbers. She is well qualified for the House Republican Conference.

For comparison’s sake, Ann Kirkpatrick raised $328,000, Mary Kim Titla raised $54,000 and Howard Shanker raised $33,000. Hay’s main challenger, Preston Korn, raised a bit less than $3,000.

Wally or Wall-E as you called him in his review of 1st Congressional District mentioned Sydney Hay reported her campaign had raised $95K in the second quarter, which he took issue with because the campaign had issued a release about fund raiser event with Barry Goldwater Jr. that raised 100K+ he wrote “Either Hay’s campaign completely misrepresented the event of there is missing money somewhere.” The invitations for the event were mailed early March. Most of the funds came in and where correctly reported in the 1st quarter.
You are right about one thing. She is well qualified for the House and with out a doubt the most qualified canidate in this campaign.

I think it’s ironic how we spend so much time obsessing over fund raising numbers and then we complain about electing people who pander to people with money. Duh. I’m inclined to vote for the ones who raise less money. Ann Kirkpatrick is never anywhere in the district– she can’t even take the time to be in her own parade floats or to talk to a few potential voters. And why? Because all she does is raise money from bigwigs in Phoenix and Washington. Look at her fundraising reports– it’s not from people in this district.

What some often don’t look at in these “big” fundraising events is that others take a cut. Sometimes the speaker is paid a massive amount to be there (uh..Rove?), sometimes the party takes a cut for helping organize it, and sometimes others may get a cut.

Another take is that the event raised $100K, but Hay didn’t get it all.

Either way, for a GOPer she is raising very very little in comparison to Kirkpatrick. The fact that she is a mining lobbyist and has never held office puzzles me. I thought she would have raised more.

I am guessing that people aren’t all that excited about her. I am still stunned that they couldn’t find a better candidate than a mining lobbyist at a time when lobbyist basically equals “get the hell out” for so many voters.

I’m gettng a little tired of the so-called “progressives” who whine about Ann.

It’s complete B.S. to say that Kirkpatrick is not getting around her district. She’s out there six or seven days a week. She’s appeared in dozens of parades, and yes, she’s been on her own float.

And she is also attending fund-raisers. She didn’t make the rules. She’s just playing the game within those rules, and she’s playing it well.

I ask my friends in the other camp to remember that when the primary is over we’ll all have to join together, or we’ll have Sidney Hay in Congress, pushing for uranium minining near the Grand Canyon (true fact) and on the Navajo Reservation, drilling in ANWAR and voting against health care reforms.

I will pledge to support whomever wins the Democratic primary in CD1.

And while we’re duking it out in the primary, please remember the words of Mo Udall: Oh Lord, make my words gentle and sweet, for tomorrow I may have to eat them. Your candidates currently are keeping on the high road. You should join them.

How right you are SonoranSam. We can’t let ourselves get into another circular firing squad. Ann is doing great, considering the district is the size of Illinois. We see her and her staff plenty up here in NORAZ.
