Al Melvin Takes On…Um…Paula Aboud, Maybe?
I recieved an e-mail from a voter who got a robo call from Al Melvin decrying the “liberal” Pete Hershberger.
Okay, not all that unusual. Well…
Turns out, the voter that got called is a registered Democrat. Ya know, I should give Melvin a break. I know that sometimes candidates are so strong in their base that they can afford to reach out to groups that are less likely to vote for them. Maybe Melvin has a poll that shows him to be so strong in a Republican primary that he can afford to waste his resources on folks that are not only less likely to vote in the Republican primary, but that are not even allowed to do so.
Oh, even better: the guy that got the call lives in the next precinct over from me. That’s right, he lives in mid-town Tucson. He doesn’t even live in Al’s district. Okay, I know, Melvin is so confident about his chances, that he is looking past this primary and even past the general election. Al must be setting up for a later run for a higher office that he needs this mid-town voter’s support for. Watch out Raúl Grijalva, Captain Al is coming after you.
NB - Jim Nintzel has a summary of Wednesday’s debate between Melvin and Hershberger. Melvin is an environmentalist? Did I read that right?

“7:28 p.m.: Melvin says the key to providing more kids with health care is getting rid of illegal immigrants.”
Omg.

Not quite as good as his “The jury is still out on the effectiveness of preschool” line.
I also enjoyed the opening act on Wednesday night. When asked about funding education Captain Al Jr. (should we call him Ensign Williams?) stated that we should fund education through economic prosperity. Gee whiz, Vic — why didn’t the legislature think of that? Other gems included, “We have the best health care system in the world” and “Republicans need to start acting like Republicans again!”
Not wanting to be upstaged, Marilyn Zerull did a few minutes on marriage being the foundation for civilization. She was a lot of fun.
I really hope their tour comes back through town. Maybe they can book the Fox or Rialto.

Well, Capt. Al is — once again — using infamous right-winger Constantin Querard as his campaign consultant, via Querard’s company Dicessio Ltd.
Aside from the Clean Elections trouble he’s most famous for, Querard also has a reputation for being sloppy in his campaigning. In 2004, perennial LD30 candidate David Gowan had robo-calls go out in the middle of the night, in the wrong district, and weeks after the primary election that he lost.
In 2006, mailers from Gowan attacking Marian McClure were send to voters (including Dems) in LD26. Besides going to voters in the wrong district, they also arrived the day of the election and probably didn’t get seen until after most people had cast their ballots.
