Mr. Horne, You Have Stumbled Uncontrolably Into the Truth
Hat tip to Man Eegee for pointing me to this one. I say “hat tip,” because saying “dap” may get me on a terrorist watch list.
So, Tom Horne is being attacked by the Goldwater Institute. I know, I know: who do you root for in that one?
The Goldwater Institute is attacking Horne for temporarily suspending a scholarship program in one of their “Daily e-Mails.” Horne ended giving the scholarships this year under advice from Attorney General Terry Goddard. He has a responsibility to follow advice from the Attorney General, of course, ideology driven activists have no responsibility to follow constitutional directives.
The dumb part is that Horne supports the scholarships, and has even directed the Attorney General to appeal the decision that forced his department to suspend the program. This little fact would get in the way of the Goldwater Institute’s usual faux high minded handwringing, so it is ignored.
The real comedy comes in Horne’s reaction to the e-mail, which went out hours after the Goldwater e-mail. He titled it “Lies from the Goldwater Institute.”
The Goldwater Institute recently put out an email that lied about me. It said “Tom Horne Halts Scholarships” and that I am telling children “that their hopes are coming to an end.” The fact is that I vigorously defended the scholarship programs in the court of appeals, and have instructed the Attorney General to file a further appeal with the Supreme Court. The Goldwater Institute knew this.
In the meantime, I was instructed by the Attorney General to fund the remainder of the scholarships for this year, to take applications for next year, but not to grant applications for next year until we have heard from the Supreme Court. As a public official, I have a fiduciary duty not to pay out public funds when instructed not to do so by the Attorney General, unless the courts say otherwise.
I am instructing the Attorney General to apply for a stay of the court of appeals decision, so that we could grant applications for next year as well, pending a decision by the Arizona Supreme Court. In the meantime, I am obligated to follow the instructions from the Attorney General.
Strong reaction, but my favorite part is in the last paragraph:
The Goldwater Institute put out an email saying that I had unilaterally halted these programs. That is a lie. Don’t believe anything that you hear from them.
Wow, that last sentence almost makes me want to like Horne. Almost.

Ted,
Small typo: adverb “temporarily” on first line of 3rd paragraph.
