A Précis of Sorts
When she decided to vote for the anti-gay marriage amendment, Marian McClure gave an apology of sorts. Folks at the capitol have seen this before; McClure does these things and the rest of us are still supposed to see her as a level headed moderate because she feels bad for herself. I don’t have an exact copy of her explanation of the vote, but R-Cubed’s crack research team has pieced this summary together from reports:
I am sorry that I have to vote for this bill. I have found out that there are some people in Arizona that hate their gay neighbors more than they want an otherwise intelligent, thoughtful person regulating utilities. I have decided that I really want the votes of these people. I hope you will respect me in the morning.
So, this now moves on to the Senate. What, pray tell, is Tim Bee to do?

Lost respect for Rep. McClure for her selfish vote against gay couples and this civil rights issue. Hope she loses her statewide bid for Corporation Commission.
Of couse Bee will support it as he was one of those who introduced this hateful piece of legislative redundancy.

Once upon a time I read a book on some civil rights struggles.
In this book was a quote from a Florida Congressman who voted against his district (paraphrased as I do not remember the actual quote):
“I may not need to get re-elected but I do need to live with myself.”
All politicians would do well to remember that.

Carol is “right on” on each thing she says above.
yeah, I dont see this as a tough one at all for Bee. He is NOT…NOT…NOT a moderate folks. He is going to be more concerned with winning Cochise, upper Pima, and parts of Santa Cruz counties than caring much for civil rights.
Also, yep…here I go again, but look at his interest group record on this issue from the past (from Project Vote Smart http://www.votesmart.org)
“2006 Senator Bee supported the interests of the Equality Arizona 0 percent in 2006.”
Equality Arizona is the lead group in favor of opening the legal definition of marriage to LGBT couples.
and under his voting record, it listed a “Yes” vote for the following piece of crap piece of legislation, which reads broadly but that also strikes very coldly against gay and lesbian couples wishing to adopt.
Bill Number: HB 2696
Issues: Civil Liberties and Civil Rights, Family and Children Issues, Social Issues

Folks should contact their State Senator, whichever party, and ask them to oppose this turkey.
Rumor has it that Bee doesn’t want to bring it to the Floor, but the forces of darkness will try to circumvent him by getting a discharge petititon signed.
I think they need 18 of 30 votes. Tell your Senator not to be one of the 18.

Is this woman serious? She sells out her conscience and then asks the voters to forgive her? She is loopier than I thought.
Excellent quote Appleblossom.

Sam–
They only need 16 votes in the Senate to send the measure to the ballot in the fall. Getting there may be tough, though: Democrats will likely all oppose it and two of the 17 GOP (Allen and O’Halleran) have been pretty consistent in opposing measures like this in the past.

Skoora: I’m no parliamentary expert, but as I understand it, the issue isn’t getting 16+31 votes for passage….the issue is overriding the Senate President’s refusal to put it on a COW calendar. To override his objections I believe they need 18 votes, not a simple majority.
But I may be wrong. Heck, it’s only happened three or four times this morning….
