What I Did Yesterday
Here’s some unsolicited advice for y’all if you are not trying to construct a coherent argument:
- Claim that soccer is a sport of rich kids while making arguments on behalf of horse racing.
- When you realize that that argument isn’t working, switch to the argument that the local soccer community is not interested in coaching poor kids. Then, make the argument to move the new proposed soccer fields to the far North West Side, even further from the poor kids you are now advocating for.
- Claim a lack of knowledge of soccer, but claim to know about an obscure rule that mandates that the fields can only be used for soccer tournaments and nothing else. Make this argument that these fields will rarely get used on behalf of a sport with a month long season.
- Claim that the county could just knock down the schools that are closing and make those into soccer fields, because, obviously, this is a done deal and the county has the power to do this. Make sure to make this argument after Dan Eckstrom, who has worked hard to keep Ochoa School open, has left the room.
- Claim that you don’t trust the county to spend the money build a new race track at the county fairgrounds. Make this argument at the same time you are arguing for $10 million dollars from that same county government to fix the current track.
- Oh, and when you make that argument about not trusting the county to build a new track, neglect to include the fact that you were one of the people who sat on a committee that recommended exactly that.
- Complain about how you are out numbered by soccer advocates, even though the two people in the community that have been most vocal on your side told people not to come to the meeting.
- Make claims that thousands of people showing up to horse races at Rillito Downs, then argue that there will be tremendous parking problems if soccer is played there.
- Once you speak on behalf of keeping the track, leave the meeting so that you can’t hear a rebuttal of your more ridiculous arguments. As long as you don’t hear them, they can’t be true, right?
NB - ‘Keeper and former legislative candidate Joe Pyritz posted yesterday asking if the fields will be used for adult leagues as well. Yes, and they can even be used for other sports. Even if the lion’s share of their use is for youth leagues, this will serve to free up other fields at other locations for adult leagues. There is another bond proposal to light more fields as well, which would triple the time that they can be used. One of the people that spoke on behalf of the proposal was a guy on the board of the Tucson Metro League, our largest local adult men’s league.
