You Read it Here First
When I was working at KAMP, we had a couple of hipper-than-thous who would always try to out do you on the latest bands. You’d come in with some CD you had bought and say, “Hey, I just found these guys, and they are great.” Sure enough, some jackass with a Descendants tee-shirt would come back with, “Yeah, I got the Dutch import of that a month ago. The mix on the third track is much better on that one.”
Finally, it is our chance to do the same thing. Matt Benson reported yesterday that Ken Bennett has bowed out of the CD 1 race. Nice, but you, dear readers, knew that last week.
See, we are just cooler than everyone else.
An amusing side note to this race not to be the candidate is the lengths that folks are now going to to find someone besides Sydney Hay and Preston Korn to fly the Republican banner. What’s funny is that they forced a perfectly decent candidate, Kris Mayes, out of the race and now they are scrambling to find someone to run. Oops.
An anonymous person sent me an e-mail suggesting that John McCain is trying to recruit another candidate. It is always hard to put stock in such things, but it seems more interesting to me that Republicans are so desperate to find someone that they are feeding a name to me.
The name that was suggested to me is a young McCain staffer that doesn’t live in the district and not only was a registered Democrat up until a couple of years ago, he actually worked for the local John Kerry campaign. All reports I’ve heard is that he’s a decent guy, but it doesn’t exactly sound like the profile of someone that can win a Republican primary. I wasn’t able to get in touch with the person, but a friend of his told me he’d likely not be interested anyway.
Another thing: let’s say that McCain recruits a candidate. What possible help can he offer? I mean, he’s a wee bit busy right now.

It is definitely not so hard to understand why some in the GOP would like to see someone OTHER than Hay. After all that has happened on K Street, the way that Renzi went down in flames, I ask this:
Who on earth would support a mining industry lobbyist over someone like Kirkpatrick (assuming that she gets the nomination of course).
Her job and “contributions” (snicker snicker) to public service only remind voters of why they lost Renzi and of the failures of other GOP House members like Hayworth.
I can envision the ads right now.

Hay is also a political ally of Ron Paul (in fact he held a fundraiser for her in 2002) and and an anti-abortion activist who is on the extreme right. This is a more moderate district (just look at Renzi’s voting record as he tried to stay on top of a district with an 8% Democratic registration edge) so I suspect it won’t be that hard to paint Hay as too far to the right for this district.
I might also add that I met Hay once, not so long ago at 10 in the morning and her breath reeked of alcohol. I don’t know if she has a drinking problem but in today’s 24/7 campaigns of open mikes, cell phone cameras, etc. I’d be willing to bet that if she does it will be picked up. Normally not such a big issue but since what Republican base that there is here is largely LDS that kind of thing could be a problem for her as well.
Plus I know people who if they found out that she was a bit tipsy, would love to try and start an argument with her to see if they could provoke her into a gaffe.
