Sydney Hay It Is!
What, an anouncement on Friday? Naw…Monday? Hey, it’s Tuesday…
The new word on the street (because, as Howard Devoto said, I am the street where you live) is that Ken Bennett will not run for congress. Heck, he already was a senator and a president, why would he want to settle for representative now?
The talk is that Bennett and his circle took a look and CD 1 is not looking like the hospitable place for Republicans that folks thought it would be. Apparently, the polling is real bad for them. Aww.
I’m wondering about what this means for John McCain. First off, the moderate-beyond-petty-politics-maverick pushed the more moderate Kris Mayes out of the race to entice the more conservative Bennett to run. Secondly, even though he’s the presumptive presidential nominee, an otherwise conservative district in his home state is polling so poorly for his party that it’s hard for them to find a person to run. So much for coattails! Thirdly, even with his blessing, the guy he’s picked is saying, “No thanks, how’s the campaign going?”
Okay, let’s assume this is not true. Bennett is apparently planning to be out of the state this week, so any sort of announcement would be delayed another week. That means he kicks off next week. Add to that a couple of days to make phone calls to get volunteers together…um…when is that filing deadline again?

And keep in mind that Sydney Hay is the kind of far right Republican (in the Randy Graf mold) that is out of tune with even many Republicans in the district.
