Hello, Newman…

Not THAT Paul NewmanWe will soon be blessed with another candidate for Corporation Commission, Cochise County Supervisor Paul Newman. Yes, check your calendars, it is not 1998.

Some of you may remember that the then-State House member from Bisbee narrowly lost a race for the Corporation Commission to State Treasurer Tony West. As it turned out, West was ineligible to serve and well…you know how things work out here.

In the meantime, Newman has been serving as a Cochise County Supervisor. He has been, often to the irritation of his colleagues, a fierce advocate of environmental issues. He won big twice, when he turned back an ill-considered incinerator project near Whetstone and a potentially disasterous coal plant near Bowie. I remember having a long talk with him about the incinerator (at the Surly Wench of all places) and his depth of knowledge about the scientific, economic and ecological issues involved was stunning. In both of these cases, he won the respect of local residents, many of whom would not have had any use for him otherwise.

There was a time when the Corporation Commission was a bastion of progressive politics, with people like Marcia Weeks, Richard Kimball and Renz Jennings willing to tell the moneyed interests to take a hike when they couldn’t make their case. Getting Newman on there would take us a long way back in that direction.

  • Tell Newman he better clean the roaches out of his ashtray before driving around the state. Some may remember that Newman was busted by boarder patrol agents for possession of marijauna. Apparently while driving his county issued car he liked to enjoy a doobie or two. Peace.

You forgot to mention Jim Weeks - who was also a pioneer on the Commission (and the fabulous husband of Marcia too, of course!)

  • Can you believe the request to the Corporation Commission by APS to raise rates?

Will Paul Newman be against that rate hike?

If so, I know who I’ll vote for.

  • Newmanator:

Heh, Heh, you said “boarder.” No. Pun. Huh?

  • Isn’t Richard Kimball the name of “The Fugitive”.

  • Come on, that’s Kimble…everyone knows that.

  • Potatoe…well Potato

  • I too was going to mention his little run-in with MJ roaches in the ashtray of his County provided vehicle for which he was punished by having the vehicle taken away, but he also has a very bad record when it comes to illegal aliens too. He likes to embrace them and welcomes their presence. In my book both things are reasons no to support him for Corporation Commissioner.
