Paging Captain Renault

steve_may.jpgSo, former Rep. Steve May is in a huff. That’s right, he’s shocked to find out that a negative piece got sent out on behalf of the Project for Arizona’s Future, a group that he was on the board of. So, he has quit the board and made the requisite handwringing statement to the Yellow Sheet:

I recently learned that PAF targeted Speaker of the House Jim Weiers in his last election with a ‘hit piece’ that misrepresented his record and falsely portrayed him as an obstacle to progress for improving Arizona’s future. The mudslinging mailer apparently included my name as if I had approved the mailer. I knew nothing of the attack and I would have resigned from PAF at the time had I been informed of either the content or the context of the piece.

Okay, we are supposed to believe that May just found out about some mailers that were sent for an election that happened a year and a half ago. Actually, it is even worse than that. As it turns out, the Project for Arizona’s Future didn’t send any mailings in that race in 2006. Nope. None.

Now, PAF did send two “performance review” mailers to voters in the district in 2007, long after the election was over. These “reviews” compared the records of Weiers and his seatmate Jackie Thrasher on teacher pay and health care. If this is mudslinging, than the problem is with Weiers’s voting record, not the PAF.

And by the way, the mailers didn’t include May’s name. Someone sent me copies, that’s how.

Am I the only one that thinks it’s a bit odd that he’s making all of this noise now?

NB - Those of you that are wondering, May’s primary challenge to John Shadegg has fizzled. Apparently he is, I’m not kidding, too busy suing his parents to run for office.

  • I am delighted, delighted to see one of my favorite Claude Rains characters heading up this post.

(Rick: How can you close me up? On what grounds?
Captain Renault: I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!
[a croupier hands Renault a pile of money]
    Croupier: Your winnings, sir.
Captain Renault: [sotto voce] Oh, thank you very much.
    Captain Renault:
    [aloud] Everybody out at once!)
