Nice bio, but was really looking for his response to the question posed in your post. Is this the right link? I’d like to hear what Paterson had to say. Thanks.

Indy, from 3-14 broadcast of “Democracy Now:”
“”In New York, incoming governor David Paterson gave his first news conference Thursday since the resignation of Eliot Spitzer. Spitzer stepped down following the disclosure he was a client of a prostitution ring. At the statehouse in Albany, Patterson said he is ready to take office.
New York Lt. Gov. David Patterson: “I did not get to this position in the way that most people have, in the way that most people would want. But I made a commitment when I gave my word to Governor Spitzer in January of 2006, when I left as the Democratic senate leader to be his running mate, that I would be prepared, if an event I had to assume authority. I am prepared. And on Monday, at 1:00 p.m. I will have the oath of office administered to me in the assembly chamber.”
Paterson will become New York’s first African American governor and the first blind governor in the nation’s history. Later in his news conference, Patterson was jokingly asked if he had visited with prostitutes. He replied*: “Only the lobbyists.””

Tedski linked to the wrong website. I think this is what he wanted to highlight:
“The funniest moment of Paterson’s maiden press conference came at the end, when he was asked if he had ever patronized a prostitute.
A pause. “Only the lobbyists.”

See, this is what I get for trying to be all fancy. I had originally put the quote above the credit, like all the fancy publications do. Because of where it was, everyone’s eyes skipped it.
I moved it down, and added a colon. Now I know better.

Proving, once again that having a running mate is a good idea.
I am almost apprehensive about a Democrat win in the Presidential election, because Janet is a strong candidate for a cabinet position and then we’d be stuck with Jan Brewer as Governor (yikes!)
Most states have a Lieutenant Governor and on many, if not most of them, the Lieutenant Governor runs on a ticket with the Governor. That might be a good idea for Arizona to pursue (though granted, I can only imagine who Evan Mecham or Fife Symington would have put on the ticket with them.)

Eli, I don’t think the state should have to shell out at least another $70,000/year in salary and for a whole new staff just in case the Governor dies, screws a prostitute, or screws the state.
Also, in states that do have lieutenant governors, a lot of them spend their time trying to find things to do or are given cabinet positions to fill their free time with, because state legislators usually know how to run their branch of government by themselves.
