Given the title of this blog, I would be remiss to comment on John McCain and his newest supporter, the Reverend John Hagee.
Folks all over the Blogoverse have been asking the question, where are the Tim Russerts of the world asking if McCain agrees with Hagee’s more extreme views? Is he going to be asked to reject Hagee’s support, or denounce his views? He doesn’t seem to have done any of this yet.
Of course it won’t happen. Not that I would allege racism, but have you ever noticed that black politicians and media figures are asked to denounce Louis Farakhan or for that matter, any black person that says something deemed outrageous, but white ones are rarely asked to do so? Oh, that can’t be true, right?
McCain famously called leaders like Jerry Falwell an “agent of intollerance” when he ran for president last time. If Falwell is an agent of intollerance, what is Hagee? Falwell seems to be a piker compared to him. For example, he said of Hurricane Katrina:
I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, and they were recipients of the judgment of God for that.
Hagee has also stated that “poverty is caused by sin and disobeying the Word of God.” Never mind those Beatitudes, I guess.
He’s refered to the Catholic Church as a cult and the anti-Christ, which promted a handwringing press release from Bill Donohoe. It’s hard to take the perpetually agrieved Donohoe seriously, but Hagee’s hatred of the Catholic Church, and by extension Catholics, is well documented.
The biggest difference here between McCain and Barack Obama here is that McCain actually sought out, and hapilly accepted this guy’s endorsement (along with the support of Falwell before he died). Obama never sought out Farakhan’s endorsement any more than he did the endorsement of Amber Lee Ettinger. Never mind that, Farakhan is a black guy that leads the Nation of Islam, and Obama’s middle name is Hussein, right? McCain is a “maverick” who would never entertain intollerance, so this is just a phase or something.
End of this morning’s rant.
