In Other News, Pima Community College is Adding the Word “Airport” to Its Name

We all know about the “guns in schools” bill, the silly piece of veto bait making its way through the legislature. Interestingly, another bill, HB 2574 would make it a class 6 felony to have a weapon in a “designated security area” at an airport.

So, those of us that use airports don’t enjoy the right to self-defense the same way college students do? For shame! Whoever wrote this onerous piece of legislation obviously hates gun rights and is just plain Unamerican.

The author of the bill? Jerry Weiers. What lefty gun grabbers voted to move this bill to the floor? Among them: Bob Robson, Tom Boone, Michelle Reagan, Nancy Barto and Speaker Jim Weiers.

  • Shocking, banning guns in airports! Don’t they realize all of the lives that could have been saved on 9/11 if folks were allowed to pack some heat when they fly?

(note: this was sarcasm, I don’t want anyone thinking I support guns on airplanes.)

  • I’m catching up on my R cubed as I sit in the Tucson airport. I was just given the “special” search. Didn’t catch the guy’s name, but he was surprisingly gentle. And then there’s the guy who carried a samurai sword, handcuffs, duct tape, and a Mack-10 onto the Pima East campus last year. He was cited for a minor gun charge and released at the scene. He’s getting his gun back by the way, pending a background check. My point is this — why is it easier for criminals to carry weapons onto our school campuses than it is for me to bring my laptop onto an airplane?

And that’s not to say that airport security is too intrusive. It’s not. As I say, my new boyfriend in the TSA was gentle. But how about we tighten security at our schools to match the zealousness with which we protect our airports. And Karen Johnson, let’s go ahead and scrap your bill. We’ll give you what we used to call a “do-over”. This time you can write a law that actually makes us safer in school. Double the sentencing guidelines for carrying a weapon onto school grounds, and double the amount of money we spend on school security. You can even increase my taxes to do it. And if there are people who oppose a tax hike to keep Arizona students safe — let them say so. And let them say it loudly.
