One of My Snits

I realize that news writers often must use hedgy language. When a crime is committed, for example, nobody wants to use hard and fast language for fear that when the facts come out, they will look stupid, like Nancy Grace.

Sometimes, this just gets silly. Case in point: the report I heard this morning on NPR that a “suspected militant” bombed a polling place in Pakistan. Isn’t the very fact that the guy blew up a building mean that he is, well, militant? What other sorts of people blow places up, pacifists?

Or maybe, the report could look like this:

Shaukat Al-Hadj, the local police commander, says that the evidence no longer points to militants, but to a group willing to peacefully work within the law to affect gradual change.

Yeah, I can see that.
