Razing McCain

Today will be what might be the final quixotic tilt in Rob Haney’s quest to take down Captain John Sidney McCain III. The conservative campaign against the McCain has been revealing. For example, there is this unhinged quote posted by Andrew Sullivan where a conservative writer actually counts McCain’s position against waterboarding as violating core Republican principles. Makes you wonder what these people envision for our country.

Anyhow, Haney, who is a Republican district chair up in Maricopa county, hopes to introduce an anti-McCain resolution at the Maricopa County Republican Executive Committee meeting. Nice timing on that, since few scenarios that don’t involve meteor strikes give the Republican party any other possible nominee at this point.

Haney’s resolution uses Tom Delay and Rick Santorum (Yes, Tom Delay and Rick Santorum) as examples of Republican leaders who have condemned McCain. Apparently, Haney and his supporters haven’t realized that Delay and Santorum are a big part of the reason why the Republican party is in the mess it is in now. Ask J. D. Hayworth about that.

Haney and crew are probably taking some comfort in a sub-par performance from McCain on Tuesday here in Arizona. My own quick, unscientific perusal of the numbers makes me wonder if a big part of that had more to do with solidarity votes from Mitt Romney’s fellow Saints. The results on Tuesday, both here and nationally, should tell this hard right crew that their views are not shared even by most Republican primary voters.

Plus, it ticks me off because as long as these guys throw darts at McCain, I have to keep explaining to liberals and moderates that, no, McCain ain’t one of them.

Another intersting dynamic: there are rumors that Haney made an agreement with State Republican Mahout Randy Pullen to lay off of McCain should he get nominated for the sake of party unity. So, at what moment does Haney give it up?

NB - If the trouble with McCain is that he has worked with too many Democrats, why is Mitt Romney an alternative? I mean, he was governor of Massachusetts fergawdsaik! Hey, your party guys, do what you want.
